So far, all I can tell is Akin will not back down from principle when politics threaten them.

His principle is that "legitimate" rape is rare and that the female body can stop a pregnancy from a "legitimate" rape. I disagree with that "principle."

The trauma of a violent rape (or any kind of trauma, physical or emotional) can cause a woman to start her period and wipe out a pregnancy before it is even started.
