Rep. Todd Akin, facing calls to step aside from his bid to challenge Sen. Claire McCaskill, once called for his party's state house leader to resign his leadership post following a drunk driving incident, according to local news reports.
Akin, who used the term "legitimate rape" to argue the false claim that women who are raped don't get pregnant, called on then Missouri House GOP leader, Mark Richardson, to quit his post in 1997.
From the Columbia Tribune:
Republican lawmakers interviewed yesterday said they were expecting Richardson to step aside. ``That is the logical thing, just in terms of keeping our focus on legislation,'' said Rep. Todd Akin, R-St. Louis.
A host of Republican leaders have called on Akin to resign. Sen. John Cornyn has pledged to without NRSC support unless Akin quits the race against the vulnerable Democrat.
“Id rather see Cheif Justice Roberts resign.”
Yeah, ok, let Harry Reid and Barack Obama appoint his successor. Good idea !
“Well, we compromise our principles if we negate the results of the primary out of fear of liberals and what they say.”
I don’t want to negate the results of the primary for fear of what libs say, I want him to step down because I find him an awful spokesperson for our cause who is hurting the cause.
“Also, who is to say another Republican candidate would be more electable than Rep. Akin? Especially if pro-life conservatives are turned-off from the piling-on of Rep. Akin?”
Seriously, you want to argue that he is the most electable Republican in MO, that he is the best spokesperson for the pro-life cause in MO? If that’s the case God help us all.
He needs to get out of the way and let the Sarah & Sarah show take over Missouri.
Folks are off the rails here. It’s insane. They compare WORDS to a DUI and Torricelli’s criminality. I need a break from this place. Sick of people from OUTSIDE Missouri telling us what we need to do. Akin was elected *because* he is a solid conservative. REAL CONSERVATIVE PEOPLE elected him, not democrat plants or whatever the hell you outsiders want to believe. The party bosses here didn’t want him to win, and I’m sure they are all too happy to drag him down.
With friends like these, who needs enemies, right?
Oh, I see. If the big bad GOP simply ignore Akin’s major gaffe, the MSM would just drop the issue entirely. That is just dumb, wishful thinking.
The media are going to flay this guy endlessly from now until November 6. And they’re going to try to hang this around the necks of every other GOP candidate, by turning this “women’s issue” into a national issue.
You think that is naive? Just tune into CBS/ABC/NBC/CNN/MSNBC tonight.
Hysterical. C'mon Man! Results of the primary?! Fear of liberals? It was the liberals who put Akin over the top in the primary!
“Akin HAS GOT TO GO.”
Well, he is not going to go, so let’s come together and support him.
This is getting sick. Now we are comparing drunk driving to a misused sentence. The people most against Akin are the liberals of both parties.
And if he resigns, who’s next.
Let him stay and keep them busy.
Get some courage.
Steelman came in 3rd. Brunner would be next up, not Steelman.
You’re wrong. Real conservatives voted for him. You all need to get over your conspiracy theory.
I hope you know I wasn’t shouting at you, just vehemently agreeing. :) It’s hard to be heard over all the clucking hens around here.
Show me where. I'm open minded.
Real conservatives voted for him.
I'm sure they did. So did crossover Dems in an operation chaos activity as described by Kevin McDermott in the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Can you refute that?
You all need to get over your conspiracy theory.
There you go again with the labels. This is not my 'conspiracy theory'. These are facts described in a St. Louis Post Dispatch article posted at #46.
I was not aware that ignorance of basic biology was part of conservative principle.
I am, however, very concerned with my parents and children possibly having to cope with the evil that is Obamacare.
If this particular election did not affect that, I might be more inclined to say...let the folks in Missouri figure this one out.
LOL...I think AuH2ORepublican beat you to the punch. Yes, I didn’t think that one through. I mean after we elect President Romney. Guess that makes me an ignoramus or idiot according to these latest threads about Akin around here.
crickets ....
I can say at this point that I hate Todd Akin. This man is a piece of human filth that needs flushed.
What a selfish man.
I heard him on Hannity. What a selfish greedy delusional freak show.
Can we mount a write in for Sarah Steelman like Murkowski?
I agree with you. I, too, think I need a break from this place. Having been taking more and more time away. The hand wringers and concern trolls have taken over in the last few days. Good Luck in Missouri, whatever Cong. Aikin decides to do.
I made it clear in #30 that I was not comparing a DUI to a stupid statement. Rather, the issue was a distraction, whatever that distraction may be, that keeps conservatives from focusing on their agenda. Akin will not be able to get out his message. This statement will haunt him as Obama’s “you didn’t build this.”
It is almost as if people believe Akin is irreplaceable. That no other pro-life Republican could battle McCasKILL.
