Listen, this Akin might be a nice guy and all. Maybe he didn't mean to convey that rape victims who get pregnant were not "legitimately" raped because otherwise their bodies would have shut the pregnancy down. But that is what his poorly chosen words imply and if he can make a verbal gaffe that serious, then he is likely to make more between now and November.

We aren't playing a game of friendly table-tennis here. This election is for all the marbles. We lose and our country is likely finished. We must have the senate as well as the presidency in order to overturn Obamacare and get some decent Supreme Court justices appointed. Akin's gaffe may be a blessing in disguise because it occurred when we still had 48 hours to find another candidate. Otherwise we'd be stuck with him.

So I don't really care if Akin is a nice guy or not. If we don't replace him by tomorrow afternoon, he's going to be a liability that may cause us to fall short of our goals this November.

In baseball terms, this guy Akin just walked five in a row and its time to go to the bullpen before the game gets out of hand.

It is not a matter of Akin being a nice guy or not. The point is should we be throwing loyal, conservative Republicans under the bus for one verbal gaffe? The Dems don’t do that. Getting rid of Akins may or may not increase our chances of taking the senate seat from McCaskill. However, it may discourage Akin supporters from continuing to support the GOP now and in the future. He won the primary fair and square. Now we want to dump him for an awkward phrase. It is counterproductive in the long term to force him out.
