No wonder Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wanted to run against Rep. Todd Akin, even investing in his GOP primary victory two weeks ago by spending $2 million on ads that described him as too conservative. Missouri Republicans saw that as a plus, just as shed hoped. But after his Sunday comment that legitimate rape rarely leads to pregnancy, even some in the GOP are calling for him to step aside.
The Republican lawmaker was trying to explain why he opposes abortion in cases of rape, but instead marched straight into the tar pits, where he will hopefully serve as a warning to future candidates that the reproductive info gleaned at summer camp may not hold up that well in TV interviews half a century hence.
Rape as a result of sex by force is really rare, Akin told KTVI-TV. If its a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.

It would be nice if you were right.
Unfortunately he did not use the word “forcible”
So when many people see that word “legitimate” they equate it with the word “real”, as in....when a woman suffers “real” rape.
I cannot know his intention, but I would guess he is distinguishing between a violent attack - forcible rape, and other situations such as date-rape or statutory rape.
Doesn’t matter....that word “legitimate” is out there.
His other problem is this claim that a woman’s body somehow shuts down when she’s raped and this prevents pregnancy.
It simply isn’t true and it makes him look dumb.
So now Romney and Ryan - who have been doing fantastic ever since the VP announcement - have to deal with this crap.
Because he is like most other politicians, greedy, selfish, incompetent, and arrogant.
Claire McCaskill is cackling loudly and rubbing her hands with glee.
What cowards we have in our ranks here at FreeRepublic.
Yes.
It’s the top story on Google newsfeed this morning. And somewhere else I saw the headline “Todd Akin, Paul Ryan, and the very real war on women”....didn’t take long for them to tar Paul Ryan with Akin’s blunder.
Shouldn't we keep an open mind about it? What he said is something I've heard before, it's not something he made up on the spot. People with medical backgrounds whom I trust have told me basically the same thing. We've seen countless examples of the medical establishment making dubious claims because it's politically correct--everything from the "gay gene" to second hand smoke dangers. Why should we dismiss Akin's argument so easily?
OMG -- then Ryan should by all means resign immediately and Romney should pick someone to replace him.
Are a bunch of angry liberals really that scary to you?
Keep an open mind about what?
I’m sorry people, but women don’t have a “rape mode”
Women’s bodies do not “shut down” when they are raped.
Can physical/emotional trauma cause a delay in ovulation IF ovulation has not yet occurred? Yes.
If ovulation has already happened - will the body somehow “shut down” to prevent conception?
No.
Therefore - pregancy can - and does - happen during rape.
Just using the words “legitimate rape” is amazingly tone deaf and unnecessarily insults victims.
Akin has just handed a nice gift for Sandra Fluke and the gang.
Maybe if the race weren’t so important no one would pay attention and it would blow over.
But the MSM smells blood here.
I’m sorry — I forgot my sarcasm tag.
“Here goes the media, giving Obama exactly what he wants, more distractions that help him avoid talking about the economy.”
This is exactly what is going to happen. You have been around long enough to know how the media game will be played.
And a whole lot of liberals on this forum are playing it.
“What cowards we have in our ranks here at FreeRepublic.
Yes.”
No what we have here are people who realize how the game is played by the Dems and the MSM.
What we have here are realists.
He has to go.
And the Pubs are stupid enough to fight the battle on the field chosen by the opposition.
Nonsense.
“And a whole lot of liberals on this forum are playing it.”
Come on, you are not that tone deaf politically are you?
This is a disaster for the GOP. Just look what happen with Rush with the Fluke incident. This will be tied to the GOP not only in Mo but nationally.
Its all a matter of perception, and there is no way to change this perception. The MSM already have their teeth deep into this story and they taste blood.
Go ahead and ask for a straight Democratic Ballot when you vote in November.
That introduces a whole new dimension of stupid. Obviously, this clown can't tell the difference between a crackpot quack and a real doctor who knows what he's talking about -- how the hell is he going to evaluate expert testimony and cast intelligent votes on any subject??
If Romney is smart, he'll take advantage of the need to drop-kick this idiot out of the party and make a "Sister Souljah" moment out of it.
I'm not optimistic about him being smart, however....
Romney has no say in who runs for Missouri state senator.
Lots of new sign up dates on this thread. Funny how that works.
