Say goodnight, Todd Akin
Washington Post ^

Posted on 08/19/2012 8:01:18 PM PDT by Arthurio

No wonder Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill wanted to run against Rep. Todd Akin, even investing in his GOP primary victory two weeks ago by spending $2 million on ads that described him as “too conservative.’’ Missouri Republicans saw that as a plus, just as she’d hoped. But after his Sunday comment that “legitimate rape” rarely leads to pregnancy, even some in the GOP are calling for him to step aside.

The Republican lawmaker was trying to explain why he opposes abortion in cases of rape, but instead marched straight into the tar pits, where he will hopefully serve as a warning to future candidates that the reproductive info gleaned at summer camp may not hold up that well in TV interviews half a century hence.

Rape as a result of sex by force “is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

This reminds me of Jr. High where some kids would say that you couldn’t get pregnant when doing it for the first time, or if you held your breath while climaxing.

Steelman is not all she pretends to be:

“Sarah Steelman has been the least favored by Missouri grassroots, although she has worked hard to bridge the divide with tea party outreach. Steelman’s past of filibustering tort reform as a state senator and affiliation with unions like SEIU has given some voters pause.

“Some Missouri Republicans and business groups argue Ms. Steelmandoes not deserve conservative support because she sided with trial lawyer and organized labor interests against fellow Republicans when tort reform and changes to the state’s workmen’s compensation laws were being debated.

“In 2003, we had a real opportunity to pass comprehensive tort reform,” said Dan Mehan, president and CEO of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce, “and Sarah Steelman made it her personal mission to kill it.”

“She was also the only Republican to vote against workmen’s compensation reform bill, a fact Mr. Akin has pointedly noted on the campaign trail.”

That’s fine and dandy, however Steelman IS electable and this guy has proven himself to be an idiot and after these comments, falling into “Sharon Angle not a chance in hell” category of election success.

This single lone gaffe could ensure that Obamacare never goes away. Congratulations Missurah!

Anyone this stupid tends to be stubborn as a mule as well. I don’t see him dropping out.

The National GOP is going to run some pretty big, pretty intensive polling in Missouri (internal polls) on Monday, and Monday night the RNC chairman (Priebus) and either Romney or Ryan (or both, but I'd bet Ryan is the guy) are going to call him and lean on him heavily to drop out the race for the good of the party.

If Akin stays in he could cost Romney/Ryan the election.

Yeah — she would just make moronic decisions by siding with the Democrats if elected.

Maybe Romney could promise to make him Sec. of Health and Human Services if he drops out. < / joke>

Sarah Steelman is a RINO in the making. If elected Akin is a sure vote against Obamacare. But Steelman is only moderately to the right of Claire McCaskill. Her vote would be questionable.

My mental image is more of Akin seated at a table eating pasta while Romney carrying a baseball bat starts walking around the table talking about "teamwork."

You do know that Brunner lost as well?

So if Akin drops out, apparently the GOP selects a person, I know that some will say pick Brunner because he came in second but in this case it might not need a Brunner-type guy but someone else

His understanding of the reproductive process under extreme stress is irrelevant.

Likely his use of the word ‘legitimate’ is meant to say “that not falsely claimed”.

Most of the things you mention are standard positions for Republicans.

Thank you, smart person. The one thing you mentioned (being on the right side of the second amendment) is standard for Republicans too...and it's the only conservative credential you attributed to Palin...and as such, the statement "other than being good on the second amendment, I just don't get it?" couldn't go by without refutation. You omitted scores of other obvious conservative positions she holds.

Thanks for playing.

This clown is unbelievable. Obama/Dems/Media have done everything they can to turn this election away from Obama’s record and the economy.

I can tell you that they’re liking this distraction quite a bit more than Romney’s tax returns.

Amen. And I prosecuted many a rape. And many a victim got pregnant. What Akin said is, in addition to just being stupid, factually wrong.

From what I am reading he has to withdraw, but I admit I haven’t read the statute, but that sounds accurate.

The other thing is Akin probably set the pro-Life movement back by about 30 years. Pro-Lifers should the people MOST upset at him, not the ones defending him.
