Why Race Is Still a Problem for Mormons

.................In a June 1978 letter, the first presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints proclaimed that all worthy male members of the Church may be ordained to the priesthood without regard for race or color. Men of African descent could now hold the priesthood....
The revelation may have lifted the ban, but it neither repudiated it nor apologized for it. It doesnt make a particle of difference, proclaimed the Mormon apostle Bruce R. McConkie a few months later, what anybody ever said about the Negro matter before the first day of June of this year, 1978.
McConkie meant such words to encourage Mormons to embrace the new revelation, and he may have solemnly believed that it made the history of the priesthood ban irrelevant. But to many others around the country, statements of former church leaders about the Negro matter do, in fact, matter a great deal.
The church would benefit itself and its members and one member in particular, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee by formally repudiating the priesthood ban and the racist theories that accompanied it.
-SNIP-
The priesthood ban had sweeping ecclesiastical consequences for black Mormons. They could not participate in the sacred ordinances, like the endowment ceremony (which prepares one for the afterlife) and sealings (which formally bind a family together), rites that Smith and Young taught were necessary to obtain celestial glory.
-SNIP-
Most Protestant denominations, however, gradually apologized for their past racism

The NYT started it and it's spreading.,/P>
How does it feel to have the NYT aligning itself to your point of view? Frankly, I'd be soiling my shorts. Imagine, the NYT as a bastion of ABR conservative purity....I suppose you'll be posting Paul Krugman articles next?

Deseret was never a territory of the USA.
Quack, Waddle --
"Deseret was the name given to the region for which the Mormon pioneers sought territorial status in 1849 and to the quasi government that they carried on for the next two year. It also designated the state they repeatedly sought to have admitted to the Union, and it also designated the shadow government they conducted from 1862 to 1870. "Deseret" is a Book of Mormon term (Ether 2:3) meaning "honeybee." "

See post 177Yes, roylene, I see from your post 177 that you have posted links to the StarTribune, the Democratic Underground, and Lucianne.com, as if these were credible sources. Is it your habit now to post on FreeRepublic links to DU and Lucianne.com as credible sources? If so, DO NOT EVER POST TO ME AGAIN!
How anyone can cite DU here as a credible source without getting zotted from this site is beyond me.

Are you devoid of reason?
Did you read the entire post?
The point was in case you missed it was, that this story is all over the internet at a variety of sites of different political leanings.
Just to repeat this was after the links:
Of course they all reference the NYT article, the point is this story is out on a wide range of political leaning sites and there are these plus dozens of other sites posting, IE getting the word out that Mormonism has a race problem.
Get used to it, Mormonism will be laid bare, for the first time maybe fully exposed.
Rather than get in a twitch about it, learn about Mormonism so you will know whats coming.
grey mentioned a few posts back that the GOPe was ignorant to run a Mormon against a black man, they did and its not going to be pretty.

The point was in case you missed it was, that this story is all over the internet at a variety of sites of different political leanings. No, I didn't miss your pathetic point. The exact same point was made about GWB's drunk driving record, which was released just days before the 2000 election; or GWB's fabricated-by-Dan-Rather National Guard records, before the 2004 election. Hey, it's out there....! It's all over the Net!
This is the very first time I've ever seen anyone on FR post -- without any kind of major-barf-alert -- a link to a DU article citing a NYT article! Pathetic.
A FReeper, citing a DU article, citing a NYT article. You are a tool.

>Then what do you say about all the denominations who deny females the priesthood, such as all the major Catholic faiths, the Baptists, Pentacostals, etc. Are they sexist?<
The world’s largest Pentecostal denomination, Assemblies of God, ordains women.
My husband and I were married by Pastor Charlotte Mazzu.

Oh, good grief.
I sighted several sources that linked to the NYT article to show the story was all over the internet.
I further said there were dozens more, would you like those as well so you can approve or not approve?
This story is being presented to a wide audience, I get that you don’t like it, and actually it doesn’t matter whether you do or not.
This story is on the internet and people are talking about it, yes all the sites link the NYT but each site has its own reader base which is varied, how do you not get that.
Mormonism whether you are comfortable with it or not is being exposed on hundreds of blogs dealing with thousands of people who are going to continue to talk about Mormonism.......
it is being laid bare and that can’t be stopped.
A single drunk driving charge is not in any sensibility the same as exposing Mormonism, your attempt to equate the two is ridiculous.
If you want the links to other sites let me know which ones you approve of and I’ll post them.

Thanks, Mike. In all the years I’ve been here, I cannot recall another time when any FReeper ever said, “Look! Look! Even the New York Times, The Democratic Underground, and Lucianne.com agree with me!”
Once upon a time, such insanity would have been dealt with both swiftly and harshly by the Viking Kitties. But, alas, it seems Our Overlords are no more....Valhalla, I am coming!

Oh, come on.
Are you delusional or drunk, no one has made that claim, provide a source.
Oh, never mind its probably you just can’t read or comprehend simple English, yep that makes way more sense.
I’d like to thank you however, for supporting the Romney supporters who oppose free speech and information if that speech and information involves exposing Mormonism.
