Screeners at Florida city can't keep up, keeping many out of event

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. - Hundreds of people were turned away Monday morning at a St. Augustine campaign stop featuring Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who defended his running mate's Medicare proposal.

The people were not admitted to the event after security screeners couldn't clear them fast enough.

At the event, Romney told Florida voters that he and Paul Ryan, tabbed as Romney's running mate on Saturday, both want to "preserve and protect Medicare."

Romney said President Barack Obama's decision to take $700 billion from Medicare for his health care law was "not the right answer."

Other than defending Ryan, Romney barely addressed Medicare while visiting a state with a large population of senior citizens who rely on the program.

Romney was on his first solo campaign swing since introducing Ryan as his running mate over the weekend.

There were hundreds turned away from the Ryan-Romney homecoming in WI yesterday too because the roads were too clogged to allow all the cars to get into the Expo Center parking lot. Sen. Ron Johnson had to be escorted by police the wrong way down the other side of the road to get in to introduce Gov. Walker!

The GOP hoped for 5000 to turn out and had 13,200 instead!

I completely agree. I remember it was Indira Gandhi’s “security detail” that murdered her. I sure as hell wouldn’t trust obama’s security detail to protect Romney

This has happened several times already and it is starting to look like the Secret Service detail that Obama sent Romney is behind the whole thing. Romney would do well to ask for a detail of his choosing. Just sayin.

That is ridiculous. More people are turning out for these events than were epected and thus they are being overwhelmed - which is understandable.

Besides that, Obama has no say in the detail the Secret Service assigns to Romney.

We saw GW Bush in 2005 I think at Montague Mountain in Scranton. I remember they screened my then baby daughters diaper bag and took her baby spoon. It took us four hours to get in and President Bush spoke for 45 minutes. It took another four hours to get home. Great Time!

Secret Service protection has become a jobs program! ;-) Seriously, the Kennedy murder, the Wallace Shhoting, the attempt on Ford, and the Reagan shooting have turned the SS into a pretorian guard. Plus you know how well people screen at the airports. Myself, I would contract the whole thing out to the Israelis. I mean candidate protection, too.

We saw Palin and McCain in Virginia Beach in ‘08 - great time - but it was at the convention center and so screening appeared to be easier - but I do remember being concerned about being turned away because there were so many people!!

GHW Bush made an outside speech in Dover, DE during his term. It was on the same circle where my office was located, so I had pretty front row seats! But the nose of the bomb dog poking into the mail slot sure did cause me to jump!

If you read the articles they are clearly saying that the security detail is turning folks away. In addition, an event that Romney had planned for a small hall a few weeks back was changed at the last minute(again due to the security detail) and put in a huge hall. They claimed that the smaller hall could not be protected. Then Obama and the dems ran with that for several weeks saying that Romney had ‘sparse’ attendance and could not fill the bigger hall......blahblahblahh. Something doesn’t smell right here IMHO.

I have no more use or Obama than anyone else around here - but to actually accuse him of having a hand in causing the Romney campaign grief with a security detail is just plain ridiculous.

When it comes right down to it, the President doesn’t tell the Secret Service what to do, most of the time it is the other way around. While they got themselves a black eye with the hooker fiasco, there is just to much fidelity to the traditions of the Service for there to be a wholesale political game being played against a candidate - any candidate.

Well from what I have read the SS has lost a lot of the career dudes and this new crop is not so great. I think the hooker scandal pretty much proves it. The fish rots from the head down. Frankly, to think that Obama would never do something through any means necessary to screw with Romney is ridiculous. The man is corrupt to the core and surrounds himself with other thugs and corruptocrats.

Great report, thanks.

It needs to be pointed out that St. Augustine is the liberal capitol of Northeast FL. Downtown and the beaches are full of transplanted NYers and liberals. The vibe reminds me of Berkeley in the FL sun.

Romney rolling in there for an 8 AM rally and getting a heavy turnout is a great sign. The FL dims will sourly take note.
