>>Though I am sure most predators who wish to gain access to scouts would lie about their orientation...<<
Of course, which is why I used the phrase “weeding out.” As for the openly gay, I would no more send my son off on a camping trip with only an openly gay adult in charge, than I would send my daughter off on a camping trip with only a heterosexual male adult in charge. Doing either would be both irresponsible and asking for trouble, which is exactly why the Boy Scouts would wither and die as an organization should such a policy ever be implemented. Most parents wouldn’t stand for it and wouldn’t enroll their boys in the Boy Scouts.
Heterosexual males somehow seem to understand the impropriety of being the sole adult placed in charge of young girls overnight. Gays, some of them at any rate, seem not to understand the impropriety of being placed in a similar situation.
I also suspect many gay people see the impropriety in such a situation, but the militancy of their primary spokesmen keep them from voicing their opinions publicly. The militancy of many gays not only intimidates straight policymakers; it also intimidates that portion of the gay population that disagrees with the more radical parts of the gay leadership’s agenda.
In my son’s Troop, all of the Scout adult leaders have sons in the Troop, I would feel uneasy about having an adult leader who didn’t have his son in the Troop.
