* Democrat Daniel Akaka, 86, is retiring from Senate
* Lingle is heavily favored to win Republican primary
* Republican has set up her own cable TV station
HONOLULU, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Voters in Hawaii went to the polls on Saturday in a primary expected to set up Republicans for their first real chance at a U.S. Senate seat in the heavily Democratic state since 1970.
A victory by former governor Linda Lingle, who has an early edge in fundraising, in President Barack Obama's home state could also help Republicans take control of the U.S. Senate as they battle for a net gain of four seats.
While analysts expect Lingle to easily win her Republican primary contest, U.S. Representative Mazie Hirono and former Congressman Ed Case are locked in what is seen as a closer contest on the Democratic side to contest the Senate seat.

The debate could win it for Lingle. She's very good.
Yes, some purists on FR won't like her because Lingle is moderate in some areas, but to have her in the Senate over Hirono would be 1000% better. BTW...Lingle is a good friend of Palin.
No one here claims the bastard that I have seen or heard. The only cars with bumper stickers for the turd are driven by angry old white people, not Hawaiians or Asians.
Lingle ... rhymes with sells out to 0m0slem again.
> Zero’s home state is Illinoise, not Hawaii
And his home village is in Kenya where he was born.
” not Hawaiians or Asians. “
Happy to hear it ! You live in Hawaii ?
Lingle is a liberal and she killed the HI GOP.
Lingle’s a RINO.
Lingle pushed for the HI super-ferry and she vetoed gay marriage.
She speaks out in favor of business ALL THE TIME.
Hirono does none of this. Easy choice IMO.
I am FBI....(From Big Island) popular tee shirts here.
Hawaii needs to be cut loose from the U.S. entirely. Cut a deal for the bases and leave them to their own devices. 4 Communist members from there, for which the 2 Senators can mean the difference between a majority and minority status has to end.
If you cut HI loose China will move in. Our bases won't be a whole lot of good on Chinese communist terrain.
He was just a poor use of human skin, and a useless eater as the democrats would say if he wasn’t a democrat....
What the hell is an 86 year old doing in the Senate in the first place??
Been to the Big Island twice ( from Japan ...was there last in March ) . Going again with wife , and this time daughter , this coming March . Renting a house on the ocean between White Sands Beach and Kahaluu Beach . Love the BI and would move there in a second if I had the dough .
Hell, the Red Chinese aren’t as Communist as American Democrats.
Whatever your opinion on Democrats, I still don’t think our military in HI would appreciate us leaving them on Chinese soil and allowing the Chinese to be that much closer to our mainland.
Both Communist Senators from Hawaii are 88. (Born in 1924)
I’m curious under what scenario that by granting Hawaii independence that it instantly becomes a province of Red China.
HI is too strategic a location for the large countries to not want it and HI is too weak politically to stand on its own.
With its expanding wealth, China is the most likely candidate to take it over.
