Anti-Bullying Campaign Airs Its First Ad, Targets Parents

WASHINGTON — Parents are urged to teach their kids to speak up if they witness school bullying in new ads that target an issue that top Obama administration officials vow to make a national priority.

long-term campaign featuring television, print and web ads was unveiled Monday and will start running in October. The campaign is a joint effort by the Ad Council, a nonprofit that distributes public service announcements, and the Free to Be Foundation, a group that includes entertainers Marlo Thomas, Alan Alda and Mel Brooks.

one television ad, two girls are seen bullying a schoolmate, mocking her appearance and telling her that nobody likes her. A fourth girl looks on but doesn't intervene.

"Every day, kids witness bullying," says a narrator. "They want to help, but don't know how. Teach your kids how to be more than a bystander."

Online and print ads will warn parents that their kids regularly encounter negative messages such as "you're worthless" and "everybody hates you."

ads were unveiled Monday at an annual anti-bullying summit hosted by the Department of Education in Washington, where lawmakers, educators and government officials convened to develop a national strategy aimed at ensuring a safe, healthy learning environment for students. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius addressed the summit Monday, and Education Secretary Arne Duncan will deliver a keynote speech on Tuesday.

... well, because as adults, we were supposed to have learned our lessons on how to behave and we are now personally responsible for our actions.

When you are in drivers-ed and make a stupid mistake, there is a second, more responsible person in the car with a brake pedal. Once you have your license, that stupid mistake can lead to your demise.

My point is , why on earth should**children** be subjected to behavior that would win millions for adults in court, have the perps criminally charged, result in loss of licenses for professionals, and hefty fines for businesses?

If it is this serious for an adult , why on earth should**children** be subjected to this type of behavior? Where are the parents, teachers, and principals who should have their feet on the break pedal?

Sadly...These children are abandoned and completely helpless to change their situation. Unlike an abused adult ( who is not a state prisoner), the children are condemned ( by law) to their intolerable imprisonment and abuse.

Well....Training for a sport is a full-time job especially when representing the United States on the national and international levels. He was a little be too busy with this to be a CFO or CEO.

FunkyZero makes a very good point in his post, # 58. He points out that zero tolerance polices force children to be “continuous tattletales”.

I fear, that godless government schooling with its zero tolerance policies and effeminate and Teacher Racthed leaders are training our nation's children, and future voters and citizens, to be government TOADIES and SNITCHES!

In ten to twenty years this **will** have serious and highly negative consequences for our nation, politically, culturally, and religiously.

My homeschoolers aren't brilliant. They are **normal** and very ordinary homeschoolers.

Again:

Unlike some **really** accomplished homeschoolers they didn't win a Heisman trophy, a Wimbledon Cup, or Olympic medal, go to Ivy League schools and they did not write best sellers at the age of 15 that have been made into blockbuster movies. They weren't teenage millionaire executives of businesses they started in their garage. They didn't win any spelling or geography contests local or national.

the brilliant home schooled

My ordinary homeschoolers were not the general that led the forced that liberated Italy, France, or conquered Germany during WWII. They didn't invent the light bulb. They didn't write or sign the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States of America. They never led the American Revolutionary Forces, or were president during an American Civil War.

Gee! Imagine that!

There are hundreds of homeschool related research papers mentioned here spanning many years. If this is not to your satisfaction, perhaps a more diligent search on your part will provide you with the precise dozens of studies you require.

Thank you for your search, sadly only one paper out of the multitude listed on both sites seems even remotely related to my question (Yes I examined both lists thoroughly):

Sadly None of them address the issue(s) I raised, End results, performance as an adult.

Great the first study does show a positive correlation between one on one instruction and grades. But please remember the question I asked was about the end results. Are home school students more mentally/ emotionally stable as adults, are they better parents, do they earn a higher income?

Also the problem with the studies you showed on grades relates to "norming."

In the military we would have certain elite groups, Green Berets, Airborne Rangers, etc...

Men would try out for them and a certain percentage would make it and a much larger percentage would not.

If you measured the performance of each group you would get a certain number and that average would be higher for the elite group.Now if you needed to increase the number of soldiers in that elite group and you added to it from the finite group you had that did "make it" your average performance would drop over time due the phenomenon known as "norming".

College age...and pretty much done with college for them.

I just made a point of teaching them reading and math, long before any “stranger” ever had a chance to try anything out on them (”strangers” is what I call ‘teachers’, since I know next to nothing regarding their individual background, capability, or even if they want my kids to learn).

My kids were never home schooled in the traditional sense, it more “after-schooling”, but at the pace that I set, rather than the pace set by the schools (which is why they wound up roughly 5 years ahead).

Finally, having read Thomas Sowell, I knew from the very start that they would never step into a public school as a student (once you read his books it’s hard to sleep - one of his books specifically mentions “death education” as they call it being taught in Columbine High School - and it was published 2 years before the shooting). So the kids went to Christian schools, more for daycare and to fill in some other subjects (like History).

Worked out quite well. Without exception, every one of my coworkers with kids that followed “the usual path” and started college as adults wound up not even completing 4-year degrees and are approaching their mid-20s wondering around trying to figure out what to do in life - they are not even close to being able to match the tracks of their parents.

So I agree with W-time, those 2 years years of higher school are a total waste - it’s almost like they’re designed to make kids fail, by giving them a whole bunch of freedom (i.e., college), while telling them they’re fully mature (i.e., age 18). Also like W-time, my kids were nothing special, the last thing they wanted to do was learn reading before they were 4, and then spend the next 6 years learning 11 years of math. If they had there way, they’d be floundering around, just like everyone else I know at those ages - great at video though.

And by the way, a small bit of bullying early on at the Christian schools, not much further up, and nothing at all in college - even though part of it was junior colleges - which meant the same kids as public high schools, just a bit later - oh yea, not forced to be there. Completely different tone once they enter college.
