J.C. Penney Co. is reporting a bigger-than-expected loss and plummeting sales, as its customers continue to be turned off by a new pricing plan that gets rid of hundreds of sales in favor of every day lower prices.
It also withdrew its profit guidance for the year.
The department store, based in Plano, Texas, says that it lost $147 million, or 67 cents per share, in the quarter ended July 28. That compares with a profit of 14 million, or 7 cents per share.

Now, I wonder how many millions of dollars Ron Johnson’s going to be rewarded with for his failures.
I believe their CFO exited with $10 million after 15 only months in the position.
I guess Ellen isn’t really working out as a spokeswoman... or spokesthing.
I don’t know about the pricing plan, but when I tried to find a pair of tan cotton slacks, they didn’t have any. I had to go to Belk and pay more than I would have at Penney’s, “back in the day.”
Why go in a store that doesn’t have what you want?

We have 4 clothing stores within a half hour drive. JCP was the premier store but it’s now a ghost of its former self. Then we have Walmart, Salvation Army and Goodwill. We buy most of our clothing by mail order.
We have a Kohls and Penney’s in our local mall. Penney’s is empty, Kohls is busy. The upside in the fall of Penney’s for our family has been that Kohls seems to have doubled down on sending coupons and having sales. Their prices are in fact better.
