Fox News poll: Obama's lead grows as Romney's support slips
FOX News ^ | August 9, 2012 | By Dana Blanton

Mitt Romney has had a tough couple of weeks on the campaign trail -- and it shows in the latest Fox News poll. After a barrage of campaign ads, negative news coverage of his overseas trip and ongoing talk about his tax returns, Romney’s favorable rating and standing in the trial ballot have declined. As a result, President Obama has opened his biggest lead since Romney became the presumptive Republican nominee.

The president would take 49 percent of the vote compared to Romney's 40 percent in a head-to-head matchup if the election were held today, the poll found. Last month, Obama had a four percentage-point edge of 45 percent to 41 percent. This marks the second time this year the president has had a lead outside the poll’s margin of sampling error.

Obama’s advantage comes largely from increased support among independents, who now pick him over Romney by 11 percentage points. Some 30 percent of independents are undecided. Last month, Obama had a four-point edge among independents, while Romney had the advantage from April through early June.

There was also an uptick in support for Obama among women, blacks and Democrats.

Gallup (with a polling track record that goes back to the FDR administration) has Zero +2 over Romney with registered, not "likely" voters.

That is, if you prefer not to believe Rasmussen (+4 Romney)....

They all oversample Democrats this time of year!

(Who is away on vacation or at the beach? Who stays at home with the blinds drawn and the door barred? How are they going to poll you if you're on vacation with the wife and kids?) I might worry if not for the Gallup and Rasmussen numbers. Rasmussen -- I believe -- mathematically corrects for undersampling. I'd take all the other summer polls with a few pounds of salt. Their results should gravitate to the right after Labor Day.

My daughter, who sang at an FR rally, just informed me that she is voting for Obama because Romney is a right wing extremist who condemned gay marriage

Ouch, that's gotta hurt. Not much to be done about it though. Good luck.

Con Artists have that “gift” you speak of.

However, most people only fall for the con artists ONE TIME!

Rasmussen had Obama +5ish in 2008 and he was the closest one from what I can remember to the actual results.

I don’t get this wave of defeatism that has taken over recently. All this talk of “ABO” for years and in 2010 was just apparently empty slogans hiding a lot of sour grapes.

Romney is a care-taker type that nobody here really likes, I get it. The alternative is the unabashed dismantling of our society by one of the most arrogant and authoritarian president’s in history.

The GOP nominated Mitt Happens despite everything we did to stop it. And he’s been ineffectual in fighting Obama! If we needed a loser, why on God’s green earth couldn’t we have run John Sidney McCain again!

Instead of what? Running someone who couldn't even persuade fellow Republicans to vote for him/her in the primaries? If they were ineffectual in fighting Romney in a group which at least 60% claimed to be conservatives, I don't see how we can expect them to be effective in fighting 0bama in the general election.

+9 Dem oversample, 44-35

I saw the same comments from one poll to another back in 2008 McCain vs Obama.

Rommney needs to do better and some of us need to stop blaming the media for the GOPe's failures.

The polls shift daily during this time of the election cycle, and when you have 30% undecided in your sample, anything can come of it. Even when democrats win, the margin of their win is almost always less than the polls predicted.

That said, Obama has been having trouble raising the kind of money he needs. You knew there were going to be polls out there that were going to try to increase the enthusiasm of his base.

Stay the course, and don't lose your enthusiasm for defeating the democrat clown.

Thinking of myself at that age...you’ll never win her over with logical arguments, because if she were to admit their logic and become convinced to at least question her sources of information, she would be at odds with her entire social group not to speak of her handsome impressive professors.

And thinking of myself at that age...the only real talk you can have with her is about her anxiety to fit in, to not be cut out of her social circles. Her fear of ostracism, a fear of separating herself from what appears to be well-dressed, sophisticated Beautiful People and be thrown into the cold outer orbits of Titan’s Moons where the Snaggletooths, the Rednecks the uneducated and the Homo Ergasters abide and grool.

Really the only thing to say is, Yeah, I understand, you want to be in what seems Elite circles.

I remember in college I actually started to FEEL beautiful and 100% smarter when I parroted left-wing nonsense, I mean it. I just felt ‘accepted’ into a terrific elite, an elite of people who were just better looking, quippier and faster on their intellectual feet, tres sophisitque, etc. etc. I hope someday that will shift around to the right, and who knows? It might.

I tend to have been a little Debby Downer this week. Its kinda hitting me that “Shit, we might just lose this thing” and I am in the dumps for sure. Heck, I cant even come to FR and get a resounding love for mittens. If we cant get this group to get out and vote I dont know how we win this thing.

“If you're not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you're not a conservative at forty you have no brain.”- Winston Churchill

"I raised an idiot."

Naw. MY Birkenstock-wearing, veggie, professional artist daughter did drop that she feels safer when she goes running in her own neighborhood because of all the Republican campaign signs.

Your daughter will continue to learn as she gets older.

I don’t get this wave of defeatism that has taken over recently.

It's not called "defeatism". It's called reality. Romney needs to do much better or defeat will be the word of the day in November.

These polls are never accurate.

They mirror McCain's numbers 4 years ago. He's still a Senator today.

IDM. Mit Romney is starting to make John McCain look good. John McCain minus Sarah Palin that is.
The Mitster better hit a grand slam home run with his VP pick or this thing will be over by Labor Day.

Is it your job to support Mr. RomneyCARE's antiConstitutional
behavior?

Is it your job to support RomneyCARE/ObamaCARE?

And if it is, what does that make you?
