I think that Romney shrewdly manipulated the Media's desire to continually pit one conservative rival against another in the Republican primary, cancelling out the conservative majority in each successive primary. Hence, "Mr. 2nd-Place" gets the nomination.
Unfortunately, finishing 2nd in the general election gets us nothing. Just ask John McCain.
As for sending gay men on camping trips with young boys, I'm amazed that anyone is arguing for the right of strange men to spend time with children under inadequate supervision.
