"It has been observed that a pure democracy if it were practicable would be the most perfect government. Experience has proved that no position is more false than this. The ancient democracies in which the people themselves deliberated never possessed one good feature of government. Their very character was tyranny; their figure deformity."

~Alexander Hamilton

Speech in New York, urging ratification of the U.S. Constitution (1788-06-21)

"The origin of all civil government, justly established, must be a voluntary compact, between the rulers and the ruled; and must be liable to such limitations, as are necessary for the security of the absolute rights of the latter; for what original title can any man or set of men have, to govern others, except their own consent?

To usurp dominion over a people, in their own despite, or to grasp at a more extensive power than they are willing to entrust, is to violate that law of nature, which gives every man a right to his personal liberty; and can, therefore, confer no obligation to obedience. "

If it rains too much on the east coast won't the country tip over?

Remember that congressman a few years ago? All I can remember is it is in the Pacific and he said the island would tip over?

Anybody got a tip?

An avidity to punish is always dangerous to liberty. It leads men to stretch, to misinterpret, and to misapply even the best of laws. He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself.
– Thomas Paine, "Dissertation on First Principles of Government," July 1795; Writings: Vol. 3, Chap. 24

That’s good. Losing power in this weather would not be fun. I think we’re going to get some rain and the wind is picking up as well. It’s possible we may get some thunder and lightning too, but what was orange and red on the radar appears to be fading a bit.

"It will be of little avail to the people, that the laws are made by men of their own choice, if the laws be so voluminous that they cannot be read,
or so incoherent that they cannot be understood: if they be repealed or revised before they are promulged,
or undergo such incessant changes, that no man who knows what the law is to-day, can guess what it will be to-morrow. "

It’s raining cats and dogs here! We can hear thunder, but it’s not terribly near.

I’m glad we’re getting the rain, but I can imagine some flash flooding in the usual places. The thunder sounds closer.

"The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all.

I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere."
