Earning the rank of Eagle Scout is an arduous task, requiring dedication and hard work.
Returning the award was equally difficult for Steven Colella, 23, of Frederick, but it was a necessary one, he said.
Colella, who is gay, made his decision in response to an announcement this month by The Boy Scouts of America affirming its policy of "not granting membership to open or avowed homosexuals."
I have no place in that organization. I knew it was the right thing to do for me, Colella said.
Colella, who has spent 18 years in the Scouts, sent a letter to the Boy Scouts of America on July 25, tendering his Eagle Scout award and rescinding an application he had pending for a professional Scouting commission.
In his letter to the Scouts executive board in Irving, Texas, Colella said that the Scouts decision to uphold its discriminatory policies has taken away the pride he had in his contributions and his respect for the program.
Most importantly, it has taken away my dignity as a human being and an American citizen, Colella said in his letter.

a scout sense the age of 5?? dont think the cubs start at 5
Scouts: On my honor, I will do my best to keep myself morally straight.
Leader: Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. (Isaiah 55:7)
"Now consider a report from the Journal of Sex Research, which noted that homosexual pedophiles commit about one-third of the total number of child sex offenses, even though they are outnumbered by heterosexuals over 20 to one. Less than 3 percent of the population commits one-third of the offenses against children!"
Sounds like he lied straight-faced each and eveery time he recited that pledge!
Both the Cub Scouts and the Boy Scouts need to make a strong effort purge the gay kids out of their ranks.
This "biological error" should never have been in Scouting. By returning his Eagle Badge, he has partially atoned for his transgressions, but he is still a lying jerk!
That is exactly what I thought as I read it.
As well as "clean"...
....and "reverent"
Just sayin'...
Since most gay men were molested as children...I wonder if he was molested. He surely did not have a place being out with his sexual problem as a leader among boys at a summer camp. Adult sex is not the focus of the the boy scouts.
Oh, I’m all for his leaving Scouting.
He would’ve had more “honor” doing this without alerting the media and by default, the rest of us. Then again, what would the these jackoffs do without forcing a daily dose of queer down our throats? (sorry for the pun)
I’m guessing it was really another scout’s medal, and that this guy will be running for the US Senate from Massachusetts in the near future, right after he convenes a “Winter Scout” lollapalooza for similarly “oriented” scouts to lie about supposed atrocities by the BSA.
Have you been in his bedroom? For all you know he's been celibate and remains a virgin.
Obviously, boasting of being homosexual is more important to him.
But, I’d bet in 30 years, like John Fraud Kerry, the medal will be proudly displayed on his wall, especially if he goes into politics.
He's finally come clean and moving on.
With some of the comments usually here on such topics, I'd expect he'd be applauded for removing himself from having easy access to child. /s
They have a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for both adults and youth. If you announce that you are gay while a youth, your membership will be cancelled. They don’t go looking to find out that you are - it’s when you openly admit it that they take action.
Whatever happened originally, it's not the Good Lord doing the splitting these days!
what you said
I guess he only mumbled when he got to the “morally straight” part of the oath ...
