HOUSTON Ted Cruz, an insurgent backed by the Tea Party, defeated the candidate favored by Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday in a runoff election for the Republican Senate nomination that revealed a wide rift in Texas between the party establishment and restless, anti-incumbent activists on the right.
With the come-from-behind victory, he is heavily favored to win the Senate seat being vacated in November by Kay Bailey Hutchison and appears likely to become a star of the national conservative movement.
Mr. Cruz, 41, is the latest conservative rebel to bring down an established party leader, tapping into simmering anger and anti-incumbent frustration within the Republican ranks nationwide.
These dissident triumphs include, in this years primaries, the defeat of Senator Richard G. Lugar of Indiana by Richard E. Mourdock and Deb Fischers win over a veteran Republican for the Senate nomination in Nebraska. They also echo Marco Rubios Senate victory in 2010 over a sitting Republican governor, Charlie Crist of Florida.
Mr. Cruz, who is Cuban-American, has drawn comparisons to Mr. Rubio, another 40-something Cuban-American who quickly became an icon of fiscal and religious conservatives around the country. Mr. Cruzs rapid ascent has already shaken up the Texas Republican Party.
Mr. Cruzs success shows that the center of the state party has moved decisively to the right, said James Henson, a political scientist at University of Texas. The Republicans are in much more treacherous terrain, not because of threats from Democrats, but threats from within the party.

Pistol Packin’ Papa (shades of Hank Thompson and the Brazos Valley Boys)?
I got way too many Robo-calls from Perry and Huckabee.
Drove me nuts. Had a daughter about to give birth(she did on the 10th of July, a beautiful girl) and had to listen (and delete) those calls to hope I didn’t miss a really important one.
The wife and I have cracked open a Shiner Longneck to do just that!
When conservatives are motivated it's "anger" and "frustration".
Dewhurst had DECADES to vote like a conservative (even if it meant holding his nose). He never got around to it - he was happier being Governor Perry’s bitch in the State Senate.
...and then he tried to fool the voters ONE MORE TIME. Sorry, no dice.
Notice that the New York Slimes still could not resist calling us ‘insurgents’ and ‘rebels’. Lol they are so predictable.
Go Cruz!
Texas politics should be fun next year. The state’s two top politicians just had their HEADS HANDED TO THEM this year. It will be interesting to see just how tough they are starting in January.
bump
Cruz is a genuine constitutional scholar with stellar record in Harvard. He argued before the Scotus numerous time. Contrast that with another person who allegedly also a stellar constitutional scholar but we never seen his scholarly work neither did he ever argue a case before the Scotus.
Ted Cruz is a "Cuban-American" born in Canada.
That was the first thing I noticed. I wear them like a badge.
We're lucky he was born in Canada. Maybe the Birthers will sink his future ambitions.
(I realize his parents were Americans working abroad.)
Cruz is serving Chick Fil A at his victory party lol. Liberal heads are exploding!
Yep...that Sarah Palin, she has no clout....nope, none at all...hahaha libs!
This reminds me of the Rubio win in FL against that a-hole Crist.
Let’s pray Cruz doesn’t soften as fast as Rubio did.
a Republican political analyst, here in Southeast Texas, and he said the Ted Cruz victory shows that the Tea Party is politically dangerous.
I would have to hear that in context. I could take that as a compliment, or take it as a slam against the Tea Party...
or in Dewhurst’s war room, where the aides had to write his concession speech after just getting done with robo calls telling voters that Sarah supports their loser.
>> “If you were to give Texas an enema, Academia in Austin would be where you would start.” <<
.
That’s a keeper!
As a child of Americans working abroad, none of the birthers would have any problems with him. Since neither of his parents were foreign citizens, he never had dual citizenship and hence no divided loyalties.
Oh noes! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
