WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama's re-election effort is paying close attention to two candidates mounting third-party campaigns for the presidency, believing they could draw votes from Republican rival Mitt Romney and help Obama win a few tightly contested states.
One candidate is Virgil Goode, a former conservative Virginia congressman who is running as a member of the Constitution Party. The other is Gary Johnson, a former two-term Republican governor of New Mexico who is the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee.
Obama's team has scenarios whereby Obama can win states like Virginia and Colorado with less than 50 percent of the vote, with an assist from Goode and Johnson.

Desperation time for Obami. The tide is turning.
Desperation time for Obami. The tide is turning.
I think 0bama is toast. 0bama is struggling in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Connecticut - I don’t think Goode or Johnson will save him. In fact, one poll showed Johnson actually hurting 0bama in New Mexico. If Romney gets a good running mate with bona fide conservative credentials, G-S-M.
A genuine moronic twofer!
meh
Of course he does. Why bother to win 51% when 34% will do?
He needs another Ross Perot and to paraphrase Rick Pitino, he’s not working through that door.
Time for the MittWits to flop sweat as we all know that lefty Mitt will have a tough time closing the deal with Conservatives...FUBO & FUMR!
Hear that 3rd Party voters-Obama is counting on you, don’t let him down!
And this imbecile kenyan used his trusted teleprompter when he said it. There’s a promise with 3rd parties the same way a third testicle shows promise.
They did well, by their standards, in VA and CO with about 1%.
I highly doubt that VA and CO will be split 49.5%-49.5%.
paging Ralph Nader
In 2000,W won New Hampshire (4 Electoral votes) by a couple of thousand votes. If he had lost NH,it would be "former President algore" today.
So never mind 51-34....how about 49.6%---49.58%----0.86% (for the "principled conservative")???
Gary Johnson tends to lean left on many social/cultural issues (pro choom choom, pro gay anal sex). He could rake some votes from Obama.
This is why we need “instant runoff”.
Unfortunately neither of the 2 main parties want it, since it empowers 3rd party candidates....
We had it for local races in Tacoma, WA up til 2 yrs ago, but in our voter guide the GOPe party hack recommended that we vote to end it, since if violated “one person, one vote”, which is a ridiculous lie.
Last I heard it was also used for CA bay area local elections.
Busy selling hope... I can smell his fear.
No surpise to anyone on this forum, but the AP reporter who wrote this story is a hopeless hack for the Obama way. His story from Virginia where Obama said, “You didn’t build that” focused entirely on Romney’s tax returns. When I tweeted the reporter asking about the Obama quote, he deleted it immediately. He writes what the Obama campaign wants him to write.
Unfortunately for Gary Johnson, the Constitution does not include “must have climbed to the top of Mt. Everest” among the prerequisites for becoming President...or he’d be a shoo-in.
