Mitt Romney Lavishes Praise On Israel's Socialist, Government Controlled Healthcare System
Forbes ^ | 30 July 2012 | Rick Ungar

Mitt Romney seems to be laboring under the impression that whatever he says in a foreign country will—like a weekend in Las Vegas—somehow stay in that foreign country.

Either that or he figures nobody back home is paying any attention.

Speaking today to a small group of Israeli contributors to his campaign, the GOP presidential candidate—and supposed sworn enemy of government controlled healthcare—had kind words for the success of Israel’s healthcare system.

"When our health care costs are completely out of control. Do you realize what health care spending is as a percentage of the GDP in Israel? 8 percent. You spend 8 percent of GDP on health care. And you’re a pretty healthy nation”

A healthy nation, indeed.

With a life-expectancy rate that is the 4th best in the world (the United States is 38th) and a reputation for delivering high-quality care to all of its citizens by utilizing the most advanced medical technology available in a hospital system we can only envy from afar, Governor Romney is right to be impressed with the Israelis’ ability to deliver excellent care while keeping spending down to 8 percent of GDP as compared to 18 percent here in the United States.

If only Romney’s appreciation of Israel’s success did not fly smack in the face of his constant, ideologically based rhetoric guaranteed to insure that only the wealthiest Americans get a taste of the healthcare Israelis receive as their birthright.

I bet many Freepers will like his comments, though. After all, it is the Israeli healthcare system.

This is why I am doing a write in and refuse to donate money to the RNC. Let’s see his friends clean this mess up for him. Get a new candidate would be the answer.

Didn’t he say he would get rid of the Obamacare.

The truth is that Israel is a country that is very small. It has fewer inhabitants than most U.S. states and many U.S. Metro areas.

What they do with health care in a generally homogeneous society is significantly different and not replicable in a continental country of some 310 millions composed of every imaginable racial, ethnic and social background. That is why the drive for more centralization in health care in the U.S. is the exact wrong thing to do.

It should be a Sates issue, IN ALL RESPECTS. If Massachusetts wants some form of universal health care run by government fiat, great. If New Hampshire wants NO role for the government in the providing of insurance or health services, that should be the prerogative of the state and it's citizens through its’ elected officials.

People would vote with their feet and reside where they feal they have the best over all quality of life.

I cringed when I read this-—Can’t Romney keep his mouth shut. What did that accomplish beside losing votes back home.

How much in yearly aid does the US give Israel?

$3.075 billion Foreign Military Financing(FMF) program aid to Israel in FY 2012.

There are also about $500 million in private donationns to Israel every year.

I wonder how Israel’s system would hold up if they suddenly had to provide free medical to ten million illegal immigrants from Palestine.

There are a lot of inaccuracies in this article. For example 25% of Israelis purchase private insurance because the system does not cover many expensive procedures. Also, the government is wanting to move to increased privatization because the existing system is running deficits. Dental is not included unless you buy that as an option. Preventative care is not covered.

Many items are true such as the total spent on healthcare in Israel as a percentage of GDP is about 1/2 of what it is in the US. Procedures are cheaper there and quality is high.

Yawn.

Romney's comment was about the SPENDING in Israel on healthcare. It's significantly lower than ours.

He was spouting about a glorious soicalist health care system in a nation that can not be compared to American in any way, shape or form. He’s a freaking socialist. We will never get rid of deathcare with him.

Most on here will only read into an article what they want. He did praise their healthcare, but, only to the extent of how little it cost as compared to ours. Israel also has a significantly smaller population - as does most socialist countries which have universal healthcare.

However, this gives the haters on here another excuse to eat our candidate. Granted, I’m not in love with Romney, and he sure wasn’t my choice for the nomination - but, we’re stuck with him - and I’d vote for my dog for president over zero.

You're exactly right and that's why the whole article and most arguments from the Left on the topic are a sham.

The scale is so vastly different as to be incomparable.

Yes. Israel spends 8% of GDP on heathcare while we spend over 15%.

They have a longer average life span and lower infant mortality rate than we do.

Their system seems to be working well for them.

But the question is, would it work for the United States?

Hard to tell since we are two vastly different nations.
