The ruggedness of the m16 vs. AKs is a long debate.

Reliability perhaps but ruggedness? I'm not sure that's a debate at all.

I’d rather be able to shoot straight and carry more rounds than the dubious advantage of a gun/club.

Me too...hence why I prefer the AR over the AK. Lighter, more accurate, more versitile, and in the correct caliber a even longer effective range improvement over the AK.

I should have perhaps said that the ruggedness of the AK compared to the performance of the m16.

They are two guns made with different missions, and can’t really be compared on their own.
AK is designed for the peasant soldier, with little or no training. He doesn’t have to know how to care for his weapon, or use it properly. It’s designed with loose tolerances to make up for the abuse, but at the expense of accuracy.
M16 is designed for the professional soldier. It must be cared for diligently, but is very accurate compared to the AK. And light weight means more ammo can be carried.
