Many years ago I read a very astute in-depth analysis of how to avoid becoming a murder victim:

1. Do not have a relationship with an abusive person of either sex.

2. Do not commit crimes or associate with those who do (the great majority of murders are criminals killing rivals and associates).

3. Do not frequent bars which sell beer for $1.

Take away those types of murders and we have a crime rate like Switzerland.
