Strong summer thunderstorms that pump water high into the upper atmosphere pose a threat to the protective ozone layer over the United States, researchers said on Thursday, drawing one of the first links between climate change and ozone loss over populated areas.
In a study published online by the journal Science, Harvard University scientists reported that some storms send water vapor miles into the stratosphere which is normally drier than a desert and showed how such events could rapidly set off ozone-destroying reactions with chemicals that remain in the atmosphere from CFCs, refrigerant gases that are now banned.
The risk of ozone damage, scientists said, could increase if global warming leads to more such storms.
Its the union between ozone loss and climate change that is really at the heart of this, said James G. Anderson, an atmospheric scientist and the lead author of the study.
For years, Dr. Anderson said, he and other atmospheric scientists were careful to keep the two concepts separate. Now, theyre intimately connected, he said.

WHAT? I thought it was R-12 Freon and Primatine Mist?
There is no turbulence at the altitudes of the ozone level.
Freon is a heavy gas which would sink at high altitudes if it ever got up there.
There are no scientific papers or studies which document that Freon can get to high altitude.
If it can't get to the altitude of the ozone, all the theories claiming damage are Horse Pucky.
These people should hang their heads in shame, or maybe return their U.S. government grants.
How much crap do these f$#@king people expect me to f@#$ing believe???
Global Warming on Free Republic
Freon is not the only CFC. However, I do remember something to the effect that at least one of those chemicals actually settles rather than rises.
WARNING: They also believe they are smart, educated, and informed; and that any disagreement is uninformed, uneducated, stupid, capitalistic, homophobic racism.
The sweet smell after a thunderstorm is OZONE created by lightning.
Thunderstorms generate OZONE not destroy it.
They are filled with Helium for a reason.
Freon is the only one that was banned, yet there are no studies cited that show how it is possible to get up to the level where the ozone is.
Every article on CFCs destroying ozone presumes the CFCs are already there. That is why the articles are Horse Pucky.
