I qualified with AR15 in 1964. Now this was the Air Force but it was a full auto and not known as the M16.

If I remember correctly, the AR-15 was first introduced to the armed forces by General Curtis Lemay for use on Air Force base security. Right back around 1964, I think.

From what I have read, when Hollywood made the movie SEVEN DAYS IN MAY they wanted a futuristic weapon for the military to be carrying. They chose the M-16.

The super duper 5.56MM round falls between the Remington .222 and Rem .222 mag in power.
