In his broadest remarks on gun control yet in the aftermath of the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater, President Barack Obama called late Wednesday for tougher background checks designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.
"A lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals -- that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities," the president, who has called for reimposing the Assault Weapons Ban, said in a speech to the National Urban League.
"I believe the majority of gun owners would agree that we should do everything possible to prevent criminals and fugitives from purchasing weapons; that we should check someone's criminal record before they can check out a gun seller; that a mentally unbalanced individual should not be able to get his hands on a gun so easily," he said. "These steps shouldn't be controversial. They should be common sense."

My follow up question: to prevent what BS? They gonna track every package weighing more than 10 lb. from CTD’s warehouses? That would require complicity on the part of the shipper, and sites like CTD and AmmunitionStore.com are not going to risk their business to comply unless ordered. At that point, the larynx of gun rights would be crushed under the heel of Obama’s boot.

Didn’t the Aurora massacre gunman use an AR-15? How can the leader of the most powerful nation on Earth not be briefed on the particulars of a situation? I used to write reports and briefings for two presidents and if I made even a small mistake like misidentifying a weapon used in a major incident, I’d be shunted aside for someone who knew what they were doing. The White House staff is much larger now than when I was a spear carrier, which leads me to think that this was intentional.

Really? He doesn't know about back ground check laws that are now in place? And how does a reputable gun-seller know if a person is "mentally unbalanced" while going through the waiting period? I guess they should read minds?
If he/she does not have a felony or domestic abuse flag, how would ANYONE know some sicko is going to do this? The man is completely ignorant of the FBI laws and doesn't realize there will always be crazies and that NO ONE will ever see them coming. There is no stopping the crazies...they will always be with us.
Better that ALL we good citizens are armed and ready to take down the crazies. Unfortunately, from what I've read with Holmes' tear gas and/or flash/bang bombs, there was probably no stopping him even if a couple of patrons were armed. It was chaos, confusion, panic, as he sprayed them. Tough for even a SpecOp guy to target with all the smoke. It's just one of those awful things that happen.
Solution: Allow everyone to carry everywhere. That will make the crazies think twice. The Bloomberg gun-grabber types that want to limit self-defense weapons never realize that if the entire US made ALL guns illegal tomorrow there would still be millions of weapons and billions of ammo available to the crazies. They never address the point that it would take a century of more to completely get rid of guns, if ever.
More importantly, they never address the statistics of communities that are armed are less dangerous, and that their wonderful utopian cities of NY, Chicago, Philly, Detroit areas are THE most dangerous cities in the country because the gangsters are using ill-gotten weapons. Has no one ever heard of a black market .38 special or 9mm? Obama and his ilk are beyond stupid. Guns exist and always will no matter what they try. Even if not sold in the USA, the black market will fill the void.

The 2nd Amendment says nothing about hunting or sporting guns, it is a direct response for an armed citizenry being a deterrent to a tyrannical government coming to power and using a well regulated militia, i.e. armed force, to enforce its rule against the People, PERIOD.
The 2nd Amendment does not require anyone to own a gun and I do not favor forcing anyone to own one if they are not so inclined. In my lifetime I have seen the most dangerous person owning a gun is someone who does not know how to use it.
However, Liberals like Peter Bogdanovich, Mayor Michael 'Let the Cops Strike for Gun Control' Bloomberg and you, President 'they cling to their guns' Obama, always want to take away my right to own the arms they just don't like.
A gun is just a tool, just like a steak knife, claw hammer or two-ton automobile, all items that can be used to kill human beings. There are no dangerous weapons but their are dangerous people that we need to be armed in order to protect our families and self.
Remember, the Police are not always just outside the window when danger strikes. They are minutes or even hours away and that delay may mean the death of you or your loved ones.
Lastly, Mr. Obama, learn about what you are talking about because your miniscule amount of gun knowledge and bogus liberal talking points only shows your ignorance to gun owners. We are not the simple knuckle dragging morons you claim us to be.

Or on minorities first, you know, just to see if it makes a difference? According to him the 2nd amendment is just to protect hunting rights and minorities and liberals are not usually big on hunting, so why do I suspect it would not go over well among his constituency to try such a thing?
