GOP Might Call Democrats’ Bluff on Typo

By Jonathan Strong

House Republicans are strongly considering going ahead with a regulatory moratorium bill that includes a major typo, forcing Democrats to object to fixing it, GOP aides said.

“We will act to fix this at the earliest opportunity,” House Rules Committee spokesman Doug Andres said.

Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) surprised the GOP when he told reporters this morning that Democrats would not consent to fixing the typo. The two parties had been discussing a deal on Tuesday night.

If Democrats do object, the House might pass the bill anyway, typo and all. If the bill is taken up by the Senate, which is extremely unlikely, the error could be fixed in the enrolling process.

Andres noted that Republicans let Democrats fix a typo in one of their bills in June 2010.

Democrats would never do that to us if the tables were turned, would they.

A real story would have included something about the actual TYPO itself, but no.

A search reveals this:

The GOP bill was intended to ban new regulations until the unemployment rate reached 6 percent, but a typo would put the moratorium in place until 6 percent “employment.”

Without consent to fix the typo, Republicans will likely need to take the bill back to the Rules Committee and begin the floor debate anew. The GOP bill was intended to ban new regulations until the unemployment rate reached 6 percent, but a typo would put the moratorium in place until 6 percent “employment.” Democrats found the error and pointed it out to reporters after the House had approved the rule governing its floor debate. “I know Republicans read the bills,” Hoyer said, mocking the GOP for the typo. “My, my, my how carefully they read that bill."

If the pubbies are going to attempt to fight evil, they had best get their sh!t together...

I wish this idiot website would tell us the details.

a typo would put the moratorium in place until 6 percent “employment.”

Depending on what the bill actually says (Thanks, RollCall !), this could be a good thing. If it says "until the employment rate is less than six percent", then I say KEEP IT!

No more regulations until that happens (never, I hope).

a typo would put the moratorium in place until 6 percent “employment.”

In other words, 94% unemployment.

There would be no one around to write the new regs, the government would have ceased to exist.

Sounds good to me! No more regulations!

(a) MORATORIUM.—An agency may not take any significant regulatory action during the period beginning on the date of the enactment of this Act and ending on the date that the Secretary of Labor submits the report under subsection (b).

(b) DETERMINATION.—The Secretary of Labor shall submit a report to the Director of the Office of Management and Budget when the Secretary determines that the Bureau of Labor Statistics average of monthly employment rates for any quarter beginning after the date of the enactment of this Act is equal to or less than 6.0 percent.

You’re welcome.

I went to your link, found the story lacking and poked around a bit. Apparently they are of the variety that doesn’t like to update breaking stories. Rather, they must prefer to post new stories as things develop.

Thanx, Fox. That's what I was looking to find:

average of monthly employment rates[,,,] is equal to or less than 6.0 percent.

So no more regulations, until unemployment is over 94%.

This could be an opportunity. Craft another bill that also has a typo in it, but one that cuts off all funding for Obamacare. Then refuse to change the typo until the Dummies agree to change this typo.
