NCAA and Big Ten sanctions imposed against Penn State

Sanctions handed down by the NCAA to Penn State and its football program.

$60 MILLION FINE

The NCAA imposed this because it is roughly equivalent to a year of gross revenue from the football program. It will be paid over a five-year period. The money will go to an endowment for "programs preventing child sexual abuse and/or assisting the victims of child sexual abuse." The NCAA specified that Penn State cannot cut other sports programs or scholarships to pay this penalty.

LOSS OF BOWL REVENUE

The Big Ten announced that Penn State's cut of the conference's shared bowl revenue - it estimates about $13 million over four years - will instead be donated to "established charitable organizations in Big Ten communities dedicated to the protection of children."

CONSENT DECREE

Penn State and the NCAA agreed that the university will follow a number of conditions and requirements imposed by the association. Among those is that Penn State adopt all the recommendations in the Freeh Report. Among those are that the university:

Excelent article. It not only gives a good description of the sanctions as we heard them, but includes others that have not been mentioned by most reports: consent decree and possible individual sanctions.

I am also glad to see that Big Ten has also joined in punishing Penn State! Maybe it is not always only about football!

programs preventing child sexual abuse

Just curious, what does such a program actually do?

Punishing Penn State is one thing. Punishing the students is wrong. Those football players won their games in the past. Don’t take that away from them.

Penn State should just leave the NCAA .. enter another football conference. Things like this have been done before... UT (Texas) left the Southwest Conference when it proved to be a dead end. Punishing a University is one thing - punishing players past, present and future is entirely another... over the top ... sounds like something obama would do ...

Good question! All I can think is setting up hot-lines for children who are abused and afraid to talk to their parents, teachers... Mostly I am glad the fines don't go to fill up the NCAA or Big Ten coffers where there's no hint of impropriety and/or taking financial advantage of an already bad enough situation.

I expect Penn State to leave the Big Ten and join the Big East within the next few years.

The players won on the field, that wasn’t taken away from them, their NFL careers that they got because they played at Penn State wasn’t taken away from them. Big deal, so it isn’t in the record books. They’ll live.

I don’t see how the future of the entire school isn’t doomed. What comes to mind now when you here the words, ‘Penn State’? Going forward who would want that on their resume?

" Punishing the students is wrong."

Also look for a big increase in tuition?

I went as far to suggest they change the name of the school and change their team name from “Nittany Lions”. Perhaps something like “Happy Valley University” or “Central Pennsylvania University”, anything to get rid of the “Penn State” moniker, because that will forever be linked to this scandal.

Over time, people forget about recruiting scandals, this will never be forgotten.

They should be forced to freeze all salaries and remove all professors that do nothing, including classes that do not further the students future.

More likely Ped State will be dumping the NCAA and joining the NAIA. The Central States League needs a doormat.

Going to be funny seeing 10,000 people show up for PSU games in a 107,000 seat stadium.

How about cutting the pensions and compensation of the professors and administrators.

Yes it will. I wonder what price season tickets will be going for in a few years?

I am also glad to see that Big Ten has also joined in punishing Penn State!

That's because the money supposedly will be spent on charities throughout the Big Ten. Does that mean that they are having the same problem???

Maybe it is not always only about football!

But it is always about the money.

I mentioned in the past to you that I’ve become a big soccer fan over the last few years. One thing that drew me to the game was a very talented high school girl who I happened to see play one night. It turned out that she had a full soccer scholarship to Penn St. after her sophomore year in high school. She starts this fall. I feel for her.

I wonder how many of THEM were well aware of Sandusky’s antics and never said anything.
