No, what they did was cop out! The NCAA as of today has shown itself to be nothing more than an associate member of NAMBLA.
To allow this “university” to engage in ANY sport under the NCAA banner ever again showed abject cowardice.
The school, at its highest levels KNEW they were choosing protecting their program over the past and future safety of innocent children. PERIOD. This wasn’t one person, or a low level staffer, this was a consipracy that went to the highest levels of the school.
Allowing them to continue to play ANY sport under the NCAA banner shows that the NCAA is a joke, and frankly cares no more about those victims, than Penn State did.
Amen to that brother- when I first heard rumours of this fine all I could think is that where does this come from? what is the economic justification.
I grew up on college football and NCAA Sports. I went to my first Notre Dame game in 1957, at the age of 9.
The whole world of “college sports” is now dead to me, along with my alma mater.
SMU gets caught with recruiting violations and gets the death penalty......NCAA is a joke!!!
While doling out a punishment, all they are affecting are people who had no part in the original crime. They are all gone and will not be affected by these punishments.
“If Penn State had even a modicum of decency left anywhere they would kill their program themselves.”
The alumni would never allow it. Forget about education or doing the right thing, it’s all about Division I $$$ and Big Ten $$$$.
I agree with you wholeheartedly, FYI.
+1 !!
The bottom line is
SMU- Minimal impact on the Dallas economy
Penn State - The entire Happy Valley economy relies on Penn State football.
That’s why SMU got the DP and PSU didn’t. Bottom line.
What NCAA bylaw’s cover sex crimes? Why is the NCAA even involved? Again the most useless organization in existence, the NCAA, is punishing folks that had nothing to do with the scandal. The new coaches, the players, the community and surrounding economy, the other sports teams, had NOTHING to do with what went on. They will pay the price. Meanwhile, the fiends, some of them anyway, will get pensions and go on there merry way. I know the Penn State haters won’t be happy unless State College is wiped off the face of the earth, however, to celebrate the meddling of a corrupt institution like the NCAA is pathetic.
The Catholic Church is giving thanks today that the NCAA does not have the power to fine and punish it. Imagine those sanctions!
“...so the question is, how if any way, can the NCAA be shamed into doing the right thing????”
Good question. I wish I had an answer.
That is the shame of it. The innocent will pay the price of the guilty.
Unfortunately, I can't think of a different mode of punishment that could filter them out.
Might help the Boy Scoutsto hold up this story every time someone asks why don’t you let gays be scout masters?
On learning of “Mann’s” collusion in the Global Warming scam, I wrote an email to PSU demanding he be fired. I got an email back addressed to “Dear Citizen of the Globe”....immediately thereafter I began throwing away any resume froma prospective engineering candidate who had graduated from PSU. I hired at least 10 engineers during that period - not one of them was from PSU.
In what I see as a climate of “protect the university, first - at all costs,” even this $60 Million Dollar slap on the wrist is not enough. The NCAA death penalty should be the death penalty - not money, but complete removal of football - for at least a generation.
This hurts ‘innocent’ students and alumni? BS. I contend the very enthusiastic and unbridled support for the ‘program’ contributed significantly to the administration’s need ‘get it off the radar screen’, put it away to protect the image and income. It’s a game, folks - not a friggin religion - no messiah here - just evil people who allowed young boys to be raped, repeatedly. That statue should be pulverized and then melted down into several dozen symbolic pairs of prision shackles if you ask me.
Not per se, but it was covering up to protect the football program. The primary motivation was to protect the image of the football program, so they could continue to recruit blue-chip players. So basically, Penn State, by covering up Sandusky's actions, were able to get players they otherwise would not have gotten. So what's the difference between that, and any other recruiting violation? The idea is to entice players to play for your school that otherwise would not have played there.
“But, its all about money, not justice.”
Bingo.
The NCAA as a leader of moral authority is beyond a joke!
Agreed. It’s a grotesque mess now. I’m not watching college football this year, and I’m fairly certain I’ll never watch again.
Go Midshipmen....without me.
There is also a code of conduct and disciplinary rules in the NCAA bylaws. I also think it is up to a University to join the NCAA or not.
Gratuitous insult. Disgusting.
I’m fairly certain covering up heinous crimes is against the bylaws. Just sayin’
