COUNTRY music sweetheart Beccy Cole has decided to reveal her sexuality to set an example to her son "that to be yourself is the most important thing in the world".
Cole said she was inspired to use the opportunity to come out as a lesbian on Australian Story tonight by her 13-year-old son Rikki.
"While you can have your privacy and all that, there are certain times and certain issues where I want to set an example to him," she said.
"I have never hidden who I am from him.
"What started me thinking about revealing this more publicly was he was bringing a friend home and said 'Don't worry mum, I haven't said anything'.
"My 13-year-old son was trying to protect me.
"It's such a crucial time for him and he needs to see his mum standing up."
Cole said she came to the realisation she was gay when she split with her musician husband Mike Albeck when Rikki was six-months-old.
The pair remain good friends and he also appears in the Australian Story episode, along with her best friend Kasey Chambers.
As for her fans, Cole said she hoped her revelation did not change their regard for her music.

Beccy Cole has decided to reveal her sexuality to set an example to her son “that to be yourself is the most important thing in the world”.
No, Bec, it isn’t. Getting as near to the Example that Jesus set is the most important thing. I guess if you don’t believe in Jesus you’re cool...
Tell them to enjoy their life without you in it. That’s the choice freely taken. People of mental stability must not openly accept and definitely not encourage more of this crap by our silent ‘consent’ “just to get along and have peace in the family”.
The homosexual “left” the normal family and created a fake one of their own.
As for the child, It’s unfortunate but there’s nothing to be done ATM with the politics as it is.
Apparently she is an Australian country singer, as opposed to the Nashville/Opry type.
OMG!!! She can’t really be a true patriot if she is a sinful, demon-spawned homosexual, can she? We should boycott all of her records and start not liking her music immediately.
No, I don't approve of or appreciate homosexuality, but neither do I condemn someone who is not like me but not a threat to me.
Thanks for her service to the troops.
I worry about the impact on her kid but it seems she is working to balance things as best she can.
On the other hand, she named her son Rikki...and nobody noticed?
dont forget Canada’s own KD Lang...

He’s either a member of Poison or the subject of a Steely Dan song. “So, mom, I guess you enjoy this Foster’s commercial as much as I do!”

A direct result from eating at the Y.
Sheldon?
Haven’t heard of her, but regardless of how good she sings or how “patriotic” she may be, I cannot support her, (by buying any records) any more than I can support anyone running for govt positions or especially judgeships, who is gay, no matter how personable they might be. There is that thing called discernment involved. Everyone has to stand for something, or they fall for anything, that is a firm line where I make a stand.

If we choose to dislike a person because of their private beliefs, then we become as intolerant as those on the left.
I love Chelys Wrights music. She sang a song about some lefty who gave her the finger because she had a USMC sticker on her SUV. She visited the troops overseas. So when she came out did that make everything did before null and void?
Is she the top or the bottom?
I'm sure that some junior high school kids would probably have gotten a giggle from your comment.
