COUNTRY music sweetheart Beccy Cole has decided to reveal her sexuality to set an example to her son "that to be yourself is the most important thing in the world".
Cole said she was inspired to use the opportunity to come out as a lesbian on Australian Story tonight by her 13-year-old son Rikki.
"While you can have your privacy and all that, there are certain times and certain issues where I want to set an example to him," she said.
"I have never hidden who I am from him.
"What started me thinking about revealing this more publicly was he was bringing a friend home and said 'Don't worry mum, I haven't said anything'.
"My 13-year-old son was trying to protect me.
"It's such a crucial time for him and he needs to see his mum standing up."
Cole said she came to the realisation she was gay when she split with her musician husband Mike Albeck when Rikki was six-months-old.
The pair remain good friends and he also appears in the Australian Story episode, along with her best friend Kasey Chambers.
As for her fans, Cole said she hoped her revelation did not change their regard for her music.

My view of her hasn't changed. She's a patriot, whatever her sexuality. Personally, I don't believe in gay people being parents, but from what she says - and I won't doubt her - she had her son in wedlock, before she realised her sexuality and both she and her ex-husband are actively involved in being parents to their son.
IBNHOH (In Before Never Hoid Of Her!)
Who?
“Well, Isn’t THAT special!”
I don’t know her & it is her life but right now I am trying to accept news about a cousin who just had a baby boy with her partner....to me it is a form of child abuse when that little boy won’t have a “dad”....how do I congratulate her when I have this opinion?
I guess I may as well “come out” too since everybody else is. I’m a 54 year old white male...and I’m a lesbian. I love women! There I said it.
Anderson Cooper.
Never heard of her. Has she been on the Opry?
“Coming out” did wonders for the career of another patriotic, female country singer, Chely Wright. I wonder what she’s been doing these days.
Reading the words of the song, hats off to her. Beautiful girl, beautiful heart.
Maybe she was just cynically trying to exploit a market by doing a song like that.
So proudly proclaiming to the world (and her son) that she is a sexual prevert.

The sound of patriotism, with a twang
As I said, she was very popular here on FreeRepublic a few years ago. That's how I found out about her actually.
Certainly not. She went overseas on numerous tours for the troops. And her support for them actually cost her quite a lot of her left wing fans.
Don't worry, you'll sober up and you will still love women.
I think that perverts should just keep their perversions in the bedroom, and if really twisted, in the closet, be they celebrity or every day person on the street.
Nobody needs to ‘stand up’ for perversion, there is nothing to ‘stand up’ for, nor to be proud about, and there is no reason to give this carpet muncher a pass because she did some patriotic songs and made some patriotic gestures.
“...to be yourself is the most important things in the world...”
Yup, I’m sure glad Sandusky was himself.
Guess James Holmes was also.
Just what exactly does that meaningless series of words mean?
“Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.” - Aleister Crowley
Despite what I feel to be the homosexual degradation of our Armed Forces and the ridiculous ways we’ve run our wars since WWII, I’m yet proud too to have such an ally in Australia, and in in the likes of Beccy Cole who at least walks the walk and believes in her country and in something beyond herself.
Just what we need, another Sodomite Lesbian country singer out there recruiting our daughters to the Sodomite Lesbian Lifestyle.
