National Guardsman identified as Darius attended a recent "Brony" convention. (BuzzFeed/Katie Notopoulos)

There's a new insignia showing up on the sleeves of a small group of military men, ... it advertises their love for a cartoon inspired by the girlish 1980s plastic toy called "My Little Pony."

"... the bronies, have taught me that there are things and people worth protecting; things bigger and more important than myself," writes Ken "Derpy" Catlin. "All because I decided to watch some "gay" little show about 6 ponies... I cannot thank you, the MLP team, or the ponies themselves enough for what they have done for me, and this world."

Within the larger group, military Bronies hold a place of honor. At ... "BronyCon 2012" ... civilian Bronies cheered wildly when they spied brethren in uniform...

“We barely made it up to the top steps and everyone outside was cheering for us," a National Guardsman ... told the site...

... A commenter on a Military Times forum was just one of many who questioned why grown men would feel such allegiance to a kids' cartoon.

“I can think of at least four violations ... attending a My Little Pony convention.”

... franchise has long been associated with little girls ... have sought to reel in males with more unisex storylines. The show stars Twilight Sparkle, a unicorn pony and five other ponies who are guided through ponyville by Princess Celestia.

As for the brass, asked if she had ever heard of the phenomenon of Military Bronies, a ... spokeswoman said "I'm unaware of the concept. But when told about Rainbow Dash patches finding their way onto uniforms ... there could be a problem.

“Please note, non-authorized, non-military patches are not authorized for wear on military uniforms,” she said.

Big time.

BTW: I’ve never been in the service and even I know that that is a disgrace to the uniform.

I looked this ‘Brony’ thing up and it’s gay.

It’s all about ‘tolerance’ and we all know what that means.

I guess I'll chime in on this one again.

Me - 44, straight male, Freeper since 1998. I started watching My Little Pony last march to see what all the fuss was about and quickly got sucked in. The current 4th generation of the show, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" is actually an amazingly good show with great writing and animation and thus the huge fanbase. If you haven't seen it you know nothing about it. It is not the awful '80s version. As for the whole "gay" thing this Brony Study found that less than 2% of respondents considered themselves homosexual.

After pausing for a moment, he said something he really shouldn’t have, and soon regretted.

Well, did she?

My room mate would record The Transformers and GI Joe. Everyday, after work, a bunch of us Airmen would eat at the chow hall and then go to my room to watch the shows. To be honest, we mostly made fun of GI Joe.

About eight of us went to the theater to see The Transformers Movie when it was first released. Several of us (not me) had transformers toys.

That said, this who “Little Pony” thing creeps me out.

No, she didn’t. That being said, the BN CO did not get a whole lot of sleep that night from being screamed at, and the next morning, much the worse for wear and tear, paid a visit to every company in the BN, who were standing in formation waiting for him, each in turn.

He was “vexed”.

It does seem creepy because guys aren’t supposed to like My Little Pony. It’s supposed to be a stupid cartoon for selling toys to little girls. The creators of MLP: FIM wanted the show to appeal to the parents as well as the kids. They never expected hordes of young men to become fans of it. I grew up watching Bugs Bunny and after my son was born watched SpongeBob, Fairly Oddparents and Thomas the Tank Engine with him, but I never really got obsessed with a cartoon until MLP.

Why would I call one a sissy?

I just wouldn’t expect a soldier to put a rainbow patch on his uniform. That’s all.

I know the majority of them ARE tough.

>>I’ve been reading Reddit a long time and I think “my little pony” refers to a pedophile’s penis. It’s how they entice young children to follow them.<<

Are you serious? Oh my God.

My Little Pony was first marketed in 1983, as - check this out - a pony. A little plastic pony. Sort of like a Breyer horse, but more cartoony and not as expensive.

It had NOTHING to do with pedophilia, any more than Disney princesses or Weebles or Fisher-Price people or Barbies, unless you think every child’s toy is a penis metaphor.
