Penn State president orders Paterno statue removal
Associated Press 4 mins 2 secs ago
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) Penn State University will remove the famed statue of Joe Paterno outside its football stadium, eliminating a key piece of the iconography surrounding the once-sainted football coach accused of burying child sex abuse allegations against a retired assistant.
The university said Sunday that it will take down the larger-than-life monument in the face of an investigative report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found the late coach, along with three top Penn State administrators, concealed the abuse claims against Jerry Sandusky more than a decade ago in order to shield the university and its football program from negative publicity.
Construction vehicles and police arrived shortly after dawn Sunday, barricading the street and sidewalks near the statue, erecting a chain-link fence then concealing the statue with a blue tarp.
A live video feed posted on the website of the Centre Daily Times of State College showed workers in white hard hats draping a plastic sheet over the statue, preparing for its removal.

You did not need to laugh at your own joke LOL. It was funny. That should get you the FR witty comment of the day nomination. Good one.
It wasn’t my joke but its still funny.
Agreed. Death penalty and let the players transfer immediately.

He was definitely an odd bird.
I doubt the situation would have been any different at any major FB power school
But maybe this will prevent future problems for a while

Agree, except I think the college should be shut down, as an example to others who try to cover this up.
How about a “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” statue with JoPa’s image?

You think the entire school, from the President to the trustees to the school Deans, etc., knew what was going on?
And they began the project early on a Sunday morning, when the student protesters are still sleeping off their hangovers.
I’m hearing speculation on sports radio that the statue may be moved to another, less conspicuous location, such as inside the stadium along one of the concourses.
I say once it’s down leave it down.
I heard that Paterno’s name is still on the library and that some at Penn State were considering moving the statue inside. Is Penn State sorry if they show actions like this? I don’t think so, I think some there liked the Paterno money too much and it shows until this day.
I’m not saying the statue should remain but the blanket over the head is one of those faux-dramatic touches that ESPN will love. If the statue is to be removed never to return then why attempt to protect it from damage - eh, PSU?
The hard hats and hi-viz vests are a sad commentary on the nanny state.
Beyond the obvious warnings about sexual predators and their witting and unwitting accomplices, it should also be a deterrent to the recent mania of statues popping up outside sporting venues everywhere. A statue is a permanent thing so be prepared to take the rough with the smooth. Should we tear down the Colosseum because Christians were killed there?
Look at what happened to SMU....death penalty killed their recruiting, equipment, maintenance, salary, personnel, etc.
NCAA needs to kill ALL sports at that college, not just football, come back in a decade and start fresh.
All titles, scores, and awards stand, and current athletes get to either transfer to another NCAA school, or add one (1) year to their eligibility in case they want to finish up academic work at Pedd State.
Good question. Check this out: Abuse Scandal Inquiry Damns Paterno and Penn State"
It's very likely many of them knew, but all I really want is for the punishment to be severe enough that any other college leader would think twice before covering something like this up.

Why should, say, the players on the volleyball team have to be punished because of what paterno did?
