My father started his business with a loan and an office in a converted chicken house. We kids often slept in his car, parked just inches from the “office” door, while he and my mother worked way into the night. They paid back the loan and made a good living in the business they built.
When it was our turn, my spouse and I also started from scratch, with only the money we had earned and saved. We calculated that we had enough to survive for a year, and, if the business didn’t make it in that time, we’d give up and go back to work for somebody else. That was a long year, but we were on our way. We’re still eating three square meals a day, and, in a small way, living the American dream.
