The road to Damascus had been the Syrian opposition's most difficult journey. Now, after one decisive and deadly strike, the world's oldest capital appears in reach.
As the dust settled at the national security building, a transformation unthinkable only hours earlier was under way. Three of the regime's leaders lay dead around the table where they had been holding a weekly crisis meeting: the deputy defence minister, Assef Shawkat, the defence minister, Dawoud Rajha, and the military committee leader, Hassan Turkmani, all key figures in the Middle East's most ruthlessly efficient police state.
Of the three, Shawkat had long been the main target. His influence and power had been unmatched since the popular uprising began nearly 17 months ago. Shawkat was, as Syrian rebels like to say, the keeper of the secrets.
Every strategic decision about the crackdown carried out by President Bashar al-Assad's regime that had steadily morphed into full-blown war had passed across his desk. He was an essential part of the inner sanctum. In many eyes, he was a symbol of its infallibility.

Trying to assassinate him and failing.
I am amazed at the dazzling double standard in this wanton assassination of government officials. Let me opine that hell and fury like you can’t imagine will now rain in these insurgents to the point of destruction of them, their families and their infrastructure aided ,I might add, by the Russian navy and army and air force. . Why do we pull for these murdering criminals? What has Assad done to this country? Zero.Is this a pretext to go fight Israels wars? I think it is and I am not going.
What happens to the Christians in Syria if Assad is toppled?
No one should have love for Assad, but he has done what he had to do to protect his entire ethnic minority in one of the most hostile areas on the planet. He is trying to save the lives of millions of Allawites. The Sunni's will wipe them all out. They have been trying for a few decades.
Yes, I know you are asking why is the US and NATO supporting Al Qeada and the Muslim Brotherhood along with highly trained assassins from the Sunni states ? The simple answer is we are being led by the criminally insane. They will do whatever it takes, no matter what the costs to humanity, to make a few bucks.
They will get murdered just like the Defense Minister (Greek Orthodox Christian) got blown up today.
Days ago, Nawaf al-Fares, the former Syrian ambassador to Iraq who has become the country's highest-level diplomatic defector, told CNN that Shawkat had run an al Qaeda in Iraq training camp. A U.S. official said al-Fares' claim was "broadly consistent with our understanding" of the Syrian regime's cooperation with al Qaeda "elements." - CNN
Anybody who supports the islamofascist Assad supports al-Qaeda and the Baathist led insurgency killing Americans in Iraq. It's no coincidence that all the people who support Assad are the same people who were against overthrowing Saddam Hussein in Iraq.
Something I give pooty-poot credit for, is that his NUMBER ONE CONCERN is for a safe and prosperous Russian people; everything else is secondary, or is a means to achieve his primary concern. Syria is a “buffer” to Russia, and that is why they support Assad (besides Assad being at least neutral on Christians, much like Mubarak and Hussein were). You really have to wonder if the American people are the US government’s primary concern.
So, we helped the Iraqi’s, spent jillions, thousands of our young men were killed or badly wounded - but now, they LOVE us!
So, we helped the Egyptians, spent jillions over the last 60 years, but now, they LOVE us (just ask Hillary)!
So, we helped the Libyans - but now, they LOVE us!
So we helped the Afganistanis, spent jillions, thousands of our young men were killed or badly wounded - but they’ll LOVE us! Really!
Is anyone noticing a pattern here?

CURRENT COMMUNIST GOALS
As read into the Congressional Record Jan. 1963:
43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.
Seems to be the basis of Obama’s support for the “Arab Spring”.
Assad isn’t an islamofascist. He’s a secular Arab Strongman who has blood on his hands but he has no choice in order to protect his ethnic minority, the Alawites. They will get slaughtered if the Sunni wins the Civil War. And then, it’ll be open season on Christians in Syria.
The problem with Syria is that we have a leftist leadership in the US that was against invading Iraq. They are now promoting the invasion of Syria. The US (Obama/Hillary) tried to get the UN to put sanctions on Syria. Russia and China stopped that. Then the US (Obama/Hillary) tried to get NATO to attack Syria after the Turkish jet was downed. They failed because NATO is pretty much spent and cannot handle Syria. So now they are forced to back Assad into a corner by trying to assassinate him and his officials. The US (Obama/Hillary) are doing this for the Sunni House of Saud.
Thank you. I feel many times I am on a different planet and no one is there. Your post has uplifted me. I am no sheep. I am no fool and neither,my friend , are you. Hang tough in the wind.
Bullshit. He’s an antisemitic islamic fascist nazi allied with Islamofascist Iran and al-Qaeda against America. Christians are also part of the anti-Assad rebellion. Assad isn’t a defender of Christians any more than his genocidal comrade KGB Putin.
The Democrats were not against the invasion of Iraq. They voted for it, remember? Clinton bombed Iraq.
Once the Muzzie Bros. take Syria, the Islamoterrorists should just about have all of the pieces in place for a final assault on America.
You think Assad will use his chemical weapons? I guess anything is possible now that they tried to take him out and failed. I wonder if they will use them in a slash and burn style of retreat, figuring if I cant stay here then neither can you.
You were talking about the removal of Saddam Hussein. So now your defense has devolved into strawmen. Great work. Next.
