One of the first high quality guns I bought when I was young was a Browning Hi-Power. I got it in 1969. At that time it was hard to find much performance ammo. The local hardware stores carried only 115 and 124 grain fmj bullets.
I did buy a few boxes of Super Vel 90 grain JHPs. I still have a partial box somewhere around. It may have been the hottest commercial load ever. I had the unpleasant job of putting down several diseased dogs.
I wanted to do it humanely and used those little 90 grain buzz bombs. I have never seen anything perform like that even including .44 magnums. The poor dogs were dead when they hit the ground. They didn’t even twitch or move. Those bullets must have done massive internal damage.
I suspect they would have been an effective load for protection against human thugs.
Ah, I remember the Browning Hi-Power. You could get the beautiful engraved version for the outrageously high price of $155!!!!
Back in 1960 I bought my first gun from a newspaper ad. It was an Argentinian Luger for $40. It even had a grip safety. All matching parts except for two.
Oh America, how I miss you.
