He started thinking he was speaking God's words--not the lines in the script, not his own personal thoughts. He thought he was speaking the words of God. I think he thought and believed that God was speaking through him. A person like that is not easy to be around.

So Alda is as pompous in real life as he was in MASH (no surprise there) - this is the first generation of entertainers who don’t care if they alienate most their fan base - Linda Ronstadt said as much in response to the “shut up and sing” fan at one of her old-lady concerts.
