Here in NJ as well; the future costs of retirees should be factored into any calculation when budgets are discussed. We had a police chief in a nearby town that retired with over $400K in unused sick time; the town agreed to pay him over 3 years for it (on top of his lavish pension). News stories like that got taxpayers’ attention. Now our road surfaces resemble something out of Mogadishu, “Stop” signs are covered with foliage, and towns are considering reducing garbage collection and firing firemen to deal with the costs of people who retired 20 years ago.

Governor Christie is heading in the right direction, but he has a real uphill struggle ahead of him.
