Egypt's Islamist president fired the first volley Sunday in his battle with the nation's powerful generals, calling on the Islamist-dominated parliament to reconvene despite a military-backed court ruling that dissolved it.
A week into his presidency, the surprise move by Mohammed Morsi threatened to plunge the country into a new bout of instability and violence, nearly 17 months after the ouster of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak.
"This is the start of a battle that has for some time been brewing," said Negad Borai, a prominent rights lawyer and activist. "In this battle, the military may be the weaker opponent since it is up against an elected president."
Morsi's decree appeared to take the generals off guard. In the first sign of an imminent crisis, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces held an "emergency meeting" shortly after it was announced. The official Middle East News Agency said the generals met to "review and discuss the consequences" of the decision.
Morsi, a member of the powerful Muslim Brotherhood, which has long been at odds with the military, also called for new parliamentary elections within 60 days of the adoption of a new constitution, which is not expected before late this year.
The dual moves were seen as a significant step by a leader whose authority was called into doubt by the generals' power grab in the days before and after the June 16-17 presidential runoff.
Last month, the then-ruling military generals dissolved the legislature after the Supreme Constitutional Court, the country's highest tribunal, ruled that a third of its members had been elected illegallya move that angered the Brotherhood and poisoned the atmosphere ahead of the military's handover of power to Morsi on June 30.

How does he like it, crispy or extra crunchy.
The military seems pretty determined to keep the MB in line. Next week should be interesting.
Be neat if they kinda just shot him. Plus all the major players in the 'slime party. Talk about an attitude adjuster.
Obama invites Egypt's Islamist leader to U.S.
“President Barack Obama has invited Egypt's newly elected Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, to visit the United States in September, an Egyptian official said on Sunday, reflecting the new ties Washington is cultivating with the region's Islamists.
Washington, long wary of Islamists and an ally of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, shifted policy last year to open formal contacts with the Muslim Brotherhood, the group behind Mursi’s win. Mursi formally resigned from the group after his victory.”

Well, let’s see if the Egyptian military has learned to shoot straight with all the training billions we have given them.
What is the Arabic word for “Pinochet”?
How are they keeping them “in line”? The army allowed the MB’s howling followers to pack into Tahrir Square to attack Christians and rape women while they chanted about marching to Jerusalem to either pray or be martyred there. The army withdrew their support from Mubarak and his family, and threw their support behind the Brotherhood (not the liberals!) for what reason?
Sadly, what we in the USA will soon need to fix the mess the degenerates in DC from both parties have wrought.

They still let Morsi take the presidential spot, and they didn’t protect Shafiq when he fled to the UAE. The elections wouldn’t even be happening if not for the military working with the MB behind the scenes.
