why are so many jew socially liberal? It doesnt make any sense.
I believe some Jews may feel a disconnect with the value of rugged individualism which is at the core of much of the conservative philosophy. Their culture puts a higher value on community resources and extended family relationships.
As a personal example, I'm as WASP, and my first wife was Jewish. While neither we nor or family never had any religious debates or issues, I was not preprared for the strife which would be caused by our cultural differences. Shortly after our wedding, we discussed buying furniture for our first apartment. My wife assumed that her father would be coming along, since with his experience in such matters he could find better stores and haggle for a better price.
We argued at length over this, and ultimately reached a compromise - he would come with us to shop for our living room furnniture, but I'd be damned if I would sleep and conceive my future family in a bedroom that had been essentially chosen by my father-in-law!
So, to some extent, I think this cultural ethic of community and extended-family reliance lends itself more to liberal than conservative philosophies.

You coulda compromised with the furniture maven getting the living room suite for you wholesale, while you carved the bedroom suite out of logs yourself with a chain saw :-)
