Normally, a citizen voter would look at the party's past performance and stance and then go from there. I think that Jews associate Republicans and somehow inherently evil Capitalist/Big Interest/Warmongering/Fascist-Bigots or at least gun-toting loonies in general. Yet, what we have seen over time is that it is the Right that supports a strong and sovereign Israel more than the Rats. American Jewry has the luxury to suffer from a disease called “Liberalism” and it is sooooo entrenched that it may never be exorcised out of the body of Jewish voters.
Israelis on the other hand, are on the front lines everyday and serve their country. They are more realistic because they are closer to death and the consequences of failed policies. American Jews are not, though they may identify with their bretheren in Israel. This makes for interesting polling as the VAST majority of Israelis support Conservative, Strong and power-projecting US Presidents while their brothers in America are like wet noodles - hence the continued support for losers like Carter, Clinton and Obama. I think a mandatory draft in the US might move the US in the right direction, including the Jewish communities - no draft dodging this time.

The movement of American Jews away from the 'Rats has been predicted by many for decades, and we are seeing it happen, albeit slowly, in front of our eyes. The posted article is indicative of that, as is the steady growth in the Republican Jewish Coalition. Furthermore, the demographic trends are definitely toward a larger percentage of the American Jewish community being Orthodox, with Orthodox families having many more children, and remaining Jewish rather than intermarrying and assimilating. The larger percentage as Orthodox probably means that a larger percentage of American Jews overall will be voting GOP in the future.

Having lived through the turbulence of the Vietnam era and the mandatory draft, I think you're way off base there. The all-volunteer military, when supported by the administration in the White House, does a good job as is. No need to return to the bad old days.
