DES MOINES, Iowa Ever since gay couples began flocking to Iowa to marry three years ago, conservative Republicans have been looking forward to amassing enough political power to put an end to it. But now that the opportunity is finally approaching, their goal may be slipping out of reach.
Conservative lawmakers are watching public opinion move away from them on the gay marriage issue, and now fear that voters might not approve a ban even if the GOP can put one on the ballot by winning control of the Legislature in the November elections.
The shifting views come as a bitter disappointment for the state's prominent Christian conservative community which has long bridled at Iowa's status as a gay rights haven in the heartland the only place outside the Northeast where gays can marry.
"People are getting comfortable with it and that's a shame to tell you the truth," said Susan Geddes, an Iowa Republican and social conservative organizer who worked for Mike Huckabee's 2008 presidential campaign in the state.
Even Republicans seem to be more accepting, said Julie Summa marketing director for The Family Leader, a social conservative advocacy group. She and other evangelical leaders attribute the change to libertarian Republicans, like supporters Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who oppose restrictions on personal freedoms.

But still, you shouldn’t flog them.
“who oppose restrictions on personal freedoms.”
forcing the courts and society as a whole to recognize your sodomy based relationship and give you particular rights due to it is not a “personal freedom.”
How much longer do we have to wait for the “we are all gay now” Time cover and story? Come on there witless window lickers out there that need indoctrinating don’t you know.
Unfortunately Libertarians do not view it this way, and would legalize drugs and many vices. They are simply about freedom and money, and have had a huge influence on the GOP as well as the NeoCons.
Social conservatism is now viewed more as the backward stance of a Huckabee or a Santorum. I think many conservative youth are going for the Ron Paul brand in which social conservatism goes the way of the dinosaur. Something must be done to re-energize social conservatism.

Romans 1
24 Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for [p]a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed [q]forever. Amen.
26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is [r]unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing [s]indecent acts and receiving in [t]their own persons the due penalty of their error.
28 And just as they did not see fit [u]to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, 30 slanderers, [v] haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31 without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; 32 and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.
Conservative/libertarian youth are almost as bad as liberal tree-hugger youth.
All our college conservatives want is the right to sleep around promiscuously without feeling guilty. Being against gay marriage would remind them that there are standards of sexual morality in this world. It would make them think too much about God. Can’t have that.
Most neocons were not fans of gay marriage. Many simply capitulated due to polling. The folks at First Things have not.

You said it, brother.
Of the two hot button issues, abortion and gay marriage, I think at the end the score will be 1:1. The public acceptance of gay marriage (because of liberal pushes on TV, public school, etc. that uses ‘love between two consulting adults’ s main argument) will increase while acceptance of abortion will decrease—partly because of the MRI technology that allows parents to see their baby inside the womb.
True. Quite true, and to their credit (those who adhere to first things)

Yes, there is an apostasy and a falling away. But for those young people who really wish they did not have to be a part of that, but feel swept away by it at college, I wish there might be a youth conservatism for them based on first things.
Agreed. And live people can repent. The innocent dead stay dead.
We already voted on this once. The people of Iowa are against gay marriage.
Judges legislating from the bench overturned the citizens vote. We promptly fired 3 out of 6 because they came up for re-election.
What the hell does it take for the citizens in this country to be represented?
Yes. But as both are issues which bespeak the same revolt against principles, it is not good for the one to increase and the other to decrease. Both should decrease. They are sides of the same coin.
I dont get where this stuff comes from. i have not seen any “flagging” where I live...people are still pissed about that whole thing, as evidenced in the 2010 elections with the ISC.
This AP story is Total BS. Journ-o-lists were saying the same thing in NC before gay marriage lost in an epic landslide.
