Having served, and not a hero myself. If all she does is play on her war injury then she is not a hero. Heroes do not talk. Period.
I do not know jack about this race, but when we had a guy constantly reminding of us of his/her exploits, we shut em down and left em to their own lovefest. See “Love Me Wall”

Left untouched, her bloviating would have hurt her.
If she only talks about her service in a debate, even dumb people will notice her not actually answering the debate questions.
