This was a positive feature. Hooray for those black families, and all families, who are willing to break the cycle of government indoctrination/dependence.

For some, it’s the only way to escape the crappy, violent public school environment, and escape bullying for “acting white” for trying to do well. In a home school, your outside peers do not know how much you study.

Good idea except African Americans being a nationality.

“Good idea except African Americans being a nationality.”
I never understood why the have to qualify the ‘African” part. You don’t have people constantly saying “I’m Italian American or Irish American etc.”

OMG, I hope that lady at 1:48 loses her kids. They seem to be do math with a pencil and paper, and the math book is in black and white, without color pictures of Nelson Mandela, Pocahontas, and others. And WHERE THE HELL are the calculators ???

I sure hope those kids turn her in, as all of the experts know that kids can NEVER learn math that way.

I suspect the one kid using the calculator near the end is either doing science (for which a calculator is fine), or higher-level math - which would still be better without calculators, even though even the old Saxon started working them in, at the end.

I did two years of mathematics at a top 10 technical university, in the course track that all engineers and scientists went through. Never needed a calculator. This was through multivariable calculus and differential equations.

High school kids do not need calculators in math class.

No arguments. I recall a materials science lab where I went out and bought a big gridded accountants pad that was probably 11x17 (this before Visicalc), in order to organize all the experimental and calculated data from numerous tests. Programmed the heck out of an HP-41C to get all the calculated data efficiently. Would have killed for Excel.

That said, learning math, really learning serious MATH, does not require a calculator.

“High school kids do not need calculators in math class.”

You won’t get me to argue that. I had to use Excel to print up Log and Trig tables (from scratch) so my kids could do their problems. I didn’t have the old books laying around.

I teach 3rd grade and my district wants us to teach the kids how to use calculators. Each class has a full class set. Mine stay locked up in a clost and my kids learn the “old” way. Administration always wonders why kids in my class consistently score higher than kids in other classes. I have even been accused of doctoring scores by other teachers and had to have another teacher be a procter once to prove that the kids were doing their own work.

Good for you. I’m not surprised to see the public schools, when noticing a class standing out, see success as a problem and feel the need to take a hammer to it.

What always amazes me is the difference in the appearance and body language of black children who are removed from the public school herd. The exaggerated racist thug and slut culture targeted at black children, is demeaning and deadly.

The same is true for white children who are homeschooled. They too are targeted as a group with a demented youth herd culture. When I pulled my son out of public school at age 9 he told me after almost a year that he had forgotten himself. He forgot that his mom and dad are funny. I think he meant that he lost his own idenity and will in the need to conform to the herd of peers. His interaction with us was so limited, he forgot who his own parents are inside. Pretty amazing. Also, that is sad.
