THE PATH TO 50
Big Government ^ | June 29, 2012 | by BEN SHAPIRO

With Chief Justice John Roberts’ unthinkable decision to uphold Obamacare yesterday, all focus now shifts to repeal for conservatives. In order to repeal Obamacare, two things must happen: Republicans must retake the White House, and they must retake the Senate.

Contrary to popular opinion, Republicans don’t need a 60-vote majority to ram through an Obamacare repeal – as Ken Klukowski pointed out yesterday, “The only way to stop Obamacare now is with a one-page repeal bill that must be passed by the House and Senate. Because it would reduce the deficit you can pass it with 51 votes as a reconciliation bill in the Senate; you don’t need 60 votes.” Republicans currently have 47 seats in the Senate. They only have 10 Senate seats up for re-election, as opposed to Democrats’ 23. Essentially, Republicans need to shift three seats from the Democrats and hold their own in order to win repeal, since the VP is the tiebreaker – although that assumes homogenous Senate Republican support for repeal.

I have no respect for voters in WVA, PA (any others?) who will vote Romney then split their vote for Dem Senator . Thank you for your support but you are idiots.

Do you think the GOP will have the guts to do this? Or, will they make a big show of trying to repeal it peacemeal, fail in that attempt then throw up their collective hands and say "OK we tried, guess it stays."

If it were something progressives wanted done, it would happen "by any means necessary". Dark of night, legal trickery or whatever and the will of the voters be damned.

Seems "our side" is more interested in getting along than doing what the people want. That's my take anyway, I hope I'm wrong.

Old voting habits are hard to break. At least in WV the senator is a Dem in name only. The only way to get elected there is to vote like a Republican even if you run as a dem.

Gonna need more than 3 seats. Getting all the Pubs to vote yes will be like herding cats.

Plus, won’t they need 60 to bring it to a floor vote?

Not saying it’s not doable. It really is. However, your going to need more than 51 republicans unless it’s so unpopular at the time you can get a Dem or two to vote for it.

I think tax bills require only 51 votes. Also I think the same applies to bills coming out of conference committees.

Both Landrue and Pryor are up in 2014. They would face Hell if they didn’t vote for repeal.

Louisiana has many, many Catholics; and Pryor (Ark) saw what happened to Blanche Lincoln.

We still need 50 + vp to get bill to Senate floor.

So, what's that mean if the administration is coming out and saying it is not a tax but a mandate. Though, Roberts kept it instated by defining it as a tax?

WIll they still be able to use the rules for tax bills? Color me a bit confused. (serious question)

It seems like the left defines things however it works best for them. I curse Justice Roberts.

If Republicans want to win more elections they should dump Rove and be more like Reagan.

They’ll need a lot more than a gain of three GOP seats. Keep in mind senators Graham, McCain, Collins and other such weasels cannot be counted on.

50 votes isn’t a majority. Especially if Biteme is still VP.

Yes.

Brother I hope you're right. Among many things that make me doubt it, the GOP House is passing a resolution to repeal 0bamcare this week. That's fine, but we all know it won't go anywhere. Harry Ried's senate won't take it up much less pass it, and this so-called president (lower case intended) will never sign it. I just hope that isn't the end of their efforts.

One of the local financial shows was saying the other day that businesses have spent millions trying to comply with this garbage. In '09 they wanted no part of it, but now that they spent the money .... maybe it isn't so bad after all.

Maybe I'm being cynical and Mittens will surprise us, but I don't know.
