Three months ago, I quoted George Jonas on the 30th anniversary of Canada's ghastly "Charter of Rights and Freedoms": "There seems to be an inverse relationship between written instruments of freedom, such as a Charter, and freedom itself," wrote Jonas. "It's as if freedom were too fragile to be put into words: If you write down your rights and freedoms, you lose them."
For longer than one might have expected, the U.S. Constitution was a happy exception to that general rule until, that is, the contortions required to reconcile a republic of limited government with the ambitions of statism rendered U.S. constitutionalism increasingly absurd.

Freepmail me, if you want on or off the Mark Steyn ping list.
Thanks for the ping Slings and Arrows.
Be sure Obama will exact a price. He invigorates himself with retribution. He is a monster.
Time to grow up and realize the most important action is to defeat Obama and bitch about Rhinos after the election.
I agree and fortunately so does EVERY conservative candidate who was in the race...and Sarah Palin.
Romney’s most recent appeal....
“Yesterday, the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare. But regardless of what the Court said about the constitutionality of the law, Obamacare is bad medicine, it is bad policy, and when Im President, the bad news of Obamacare will be over.
It was always a liberal pipedream that a 2,700 page, multi-trillion-dollar Federal Government takeover of our health care system actually could address the very serious problems we face with health care. With Obamacare fully installed, government will reach fully half of the economy that is the recipe for a struggling economy and declining prosperity.
On Day One, I will work to repeal Obamacare to stop the governments takeover of our health care and intrusion in our lives. I will push for real reform to our health care system that focuses on helping patients and protecting taxpayers.
We cannot afford Barack Obamas on-the-job learning, Big Government proposals, and irresponsible spending. Our basic liberties are at stake and I will fight to restore our freedoms, renew the respect for our Constitution, and halt the government takeover of health care.
This November its all on the line. The stakes couldnt be higher.”
Which one should we have united behind, and why?
You have your opinion, and other conservative voters had theirs. Was your opinion right, and theirs wrong? Why should they have given up on their favorite candidate to support yours?
Perhaps the problem was more about having too many conservative candidates that thought they were the Chosen One. The GOP establishment keeps winning because it has the discipline to put forth ONE candidate each time.
Can we really blame the voters for not being able to unite behind one of the multitude of choices?
Bush, Sr., Dole, W.(Roberts), McCain, Romney...
Would you say things are trending upward?
You may be correct in theory, but I’m right in fact.
If conservatives have someone they don’t want to win, but who has a lock on 30% or more of the vote, the only way to defeat him is to unite behind one of the alternatives.
He didn’t really engineer it, but Romney did a dandy job of divide and conquer.
I'll get over it - but for now - I feel defeated.
Take your pick buddy! Your vote matters no more than mine. I'm done with the kind of guys that nominate guys like Roberts to the SCOTUS!
Every time someone like you recklessly tries to insult or browbeat me into voting against Obama instead of voting for Liberty, you make me even more determined to fight. Neither I nor my growing non-mormon family will vote for Obama/Romney and the rest of the GOP is on the chopping block now because of tactics like yours!
Virgil Goode For President!
Same trend. Doesn't mean let's actively work to re-elect the Marxist who has openly declared war on the nation,
“Same trend...”
Sort of makes my point. The Republican Party is following a “moderating” principle when it comes to its candidates, thus leaving conservatives a “lesser of two evils” option. In 1992, I was displeased with Bush, Sr. but was urged to vote for him (”To not do so is to vote for their guy.”) In 1996, I was given the choice of Dole (”...or would you rather that their guy got elected?!”) 2000, it was Jr. (and again in 2004 - which was the only time I felt anywhere near persuaded that my vote was properly cast). In 2008, I was given McCain. How in the heck did he rise to the top? And was Palin thrown in as an appeasement? Now, it’s Romney and I’m faced once more with, “My Gosh! You can’t give it to Obama—he’ll destroy the country (as if it already hasn’t been destroyed by...get ready...the Republican Party. They’ve been offering one moderate after another after another, merely slowing down the decline of our country, not willing to alter its path. Bush, Jr. did more to bloat government than any other president—and, now, we see the wisdom of his judiciary choices—Constitutionally challenged compromiser who has exploded the power of government to mandate our freedoms away.
I don’t advocate anything other than a total ouster of all incumbents (something I’ve believed necessary for some time now). Every last one of them need to be term-limited...THIS NOVEMBER! Their guy, your guy, every guy. This needs to be done both in the House and in the Senate. Keep turning over this dirt till there is nothing left of what has caused the problems. Big interests can back their bought and paid for incumbents, but WE THE PEOPLE must vote them out again and again, until those folks see they are wasting their money.
We need outsiders. Period. No one associated with Washington must get in. We have to take our government back from those who control it (and that ain’t us right now). I’m tired of congress folks voting themselves stuff (that’s my money!) I’m tired of congress folks voting on bills before reading them (that’s my freedom their legislating). I’m tired of congress folks being unresponsive to phone campaigns that demand, “Don’t pass Obamacare,” then voting for it anyhow. That’s my life they’re messing with. Everything they vote for should require their immediate participation—I didn’t vote them exempt status. I voted for them to represent ME not THEMSELVES (or their friends).
I say, vote every last congress critter we can out (all the House, as many of the Senate that are up this year). Send the message. Keep sending the message. I want 435 conservative congress folk in their this Fall (I’m willing to settle for a veto-proof majority.) Then, who cares who is president. He can’t do a thing. I want congress folk who are going to impeach when a president over-steps the limitations of the executive branch placed on it by the Constitution. Period. I want justice. I want freedom. I want my GOD-GIVEN rights protected from scoundrels, usurpers, traitors, liars, and those who do not understand our Constitution. Would Bush, Sr., Dole, Bush, Jr., McCain, Romney have/have had the courage to do this for me, I would have been more inclined to trust in the Republican Party (and we wouldn’t be posting back and forth in quite this way.)
