PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The last time the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia upgraded its public exhibits, Richard Nixon was in the first year of his presidency and The Beatles had just performed their final concert.

On July 3, the Mint opens to the public with a new $3.9 million self-guided tour that is the first update since 1969. The two-level exhibit includes displays of artifacts and coins from the Mint's earliest days, as well as windows overlooking the production floor with new touch screens and interactive features that describe the coin-making process.

Richard Nixon was in the first year of his presidency and The Beatles had just performed their final concert.

That means that it was somewhere between Aug 1966, and Jan 1970. Why do idiot reporter / writers do this?

Does the tour include complimentary kevlar for when you go back to your car and armed security for said vehicle to keep the car thieves at bay? (And maybe clothing to hide your skin color in the event that the roving bands of locals decide that you don’t belong in their city)

Wow, is it that bad around the Philly Mint?

I love manufacturing plant tours. The best one IMO was the Hershey chocolate plant back in the 2960s when they toured the actual plant in Hershey, PA.

The Beatles’ final live performance was the “rooftop” event on Jan. 30, 1969 which was filmed for the “Let It Be” documentary. It was unannounced and unpublicized, but if you were lucky enough to be in the area at the time, you would have heard it. The “concert” lasted 42 minutes, and ended when the police arrived, so apparently not everyone that heard it appreciated it.

OK, if you call that a "concert", then I stand corrected - it's not as wide a gap as I imagined.

Still, it's a pointless reference for the article to make.

They missed a big opportunity here. They should have celebrated homosexual pride by putting out new coins with a rainbow instead of presidents.

Ah, are they giving out free sample?

Ok then, never mind; I'll pass.

Actually, been there-done that, back in early 70's when I was living in South Jersey (Mt. Holly/Burlington/Willingboro area) after getting discharged from the USAF and even then, Philly was not very hospitable or safe place to visit.

And as far as Camden, well fagetaboutit!!!

I took my kids to the Liberty Bell. I found it to be all about Martin Luther King and slavery.
They had the exposed slave quarters in the foundation of George Washington’s house.
It was sad to think that we cannot celebrate the accomplishment of our founding fathers.

That is weird, considering that George Washington's house is in Virginia and the Liberty Bell is in Philly.

I found that part of Philly to be pretty safe and packed with Tourists. We walked the streets and parks behind and around Independence Hall and found it quite nice. The US Mint tour was a let down. I had to wait while the Wife went in (No cameras, including phones and no place outside to store it).
