EU membership: Montenegro and Iceland edge closer
EUobserver.com, Le Temps ^ | 6/27/2012

The eurozone crisis might have made EU membership a less attractive proposition lately. Nevertheless talks with applicant countries are ongoing in Brussels. The EUobserver reports that EU states have agreed to invite Montenegro for negotiations on membership, with talks starting as soon as 29 June. EU foreign ministers said Brussels would closely monitor Montenegro's efforts to tackle corruption and organised crime during the accession process that may last several years.

Meanwhile, the Swiss daily Le Temps adds that a meeting of EU foreign ministers earlier in the week discussed Icelandic efforts to join the EU 27.

"Difficult to believe, that the island is still looking to join the EU, in the midst of the euro crisis... Why is Reykjavik continuing to push for it? ... Essentially, to secure the island to mainland Europe after the speculative financial bubble burst in September 2008."

Le Temps and EUObserver should look at the opinion polls in Iceland. There is no way the Icelanders are going to agree to join the EU. Actually, it is very doubtful that the accession agreement will pass even the Icelandic parliament.

(Strange, isn't it strange how one these days automatically assumes that the politicians will act counter to the wishes of the people? How can that be? wink, wink.)

"How can that be? "

I see the article refers to EU not EZ.

One supposes Iceland would be a net beneficiary of economic largesse.

EU is a treaty, now, agreed by governments not referenda on entry which have always lost (well Ireland passed on the second try after extreme extortion).

Republics do elect elite representatives who know best.

We were just in Kotor, Montenegro (FABULOUS) and took a tour of someof the rest of it and it’s pretty rural.....can’t imagine what they would contribute to the EU.

“I see the article refers to EU not EZ.”

What’s the difference? Is the EU the political body and the EZ the geographical area?

It’s the horror movie scene where the girl is about to open the door to the room where the axe murderer is hiding.

No! Don’t do it!
