He probably did. Many teenaged kids have duplicates. 100 miles (close to two hours) is pretty far down the road to miss Dad.

I remember a similar incident with my kid brother, maybe 6 or 7 at the time. We were only 15 miles or so down the road before someone noticed he wasn't asleep in the back seat.

This was in the 1960's. When we got back to the gas station, he was sitting on the counter, drinking an Orange Crush and eating a cookie the gas station attendants had bought for him. He wasn't the least bit worried and greeted us with an "I knewed you'd be back!"
