Everyone who is put forward has to face the knives of those who do not consider them conservative enough.
There is no understanding of where the actual voters really stand. The point is to attract enough support to actually WIN elections.

But that isn't exactly what has happened this primary season. Conservatives on FR didn't whittle down the presumed-conservative candidates in order to arrive at Romney; well, I didn't anyway. The conservatives were easy targets for the R operatives to whittle away. The Romney operatives, pertaining to just FR, did the whittling using different tactics which generated confusion, division, and induced personal misunderstandings among FReepers on many FR threads over the course of time. Innuendo and bullying are what these particular R operatives do best and they're very good at it.
We thought we had a good conservative candidate ahead of the primaries but that candidate did not seek the nomination. Next time, conservatives MUST have a preferred candidate in mind, one who will run for sure, way before the primary season begins.
