("Intellect is not wisdom" -- Thomas Sowell)

People who make no provision to feed themselves, but expect others to provide food for them, are those whom politicians and the media refer to as "the hungry." That does clarify the issue. To paraphrase what I read somewhere: Those that control the terminology, control the issue. Any wife can tell you that.

Just my daughter's observations working with families of autistic children as a newly-minted graduate with a degree in social work last year:
- About 1/25th of the kids genuinely need the professional help she and others like her are able to offer.
- The other 24/25th will see their kids improve greatly with a change in parenting styles and/or environment. Maybe a third of these are willing to take this advice and see results. The more they cooperate, the greater the results. That makes about 9/25th (36%) of them, if you are lucky.
- The other 16/25th (74%) are willing to accept her visits and evaluations just to keep the government checks coming in on time.
- These all tell her that they don't have time to read with their kids, or play catch with them, or take them to the park to collect leaves, or play a board game, or help them with homework. Or just about anything else which involves intense child=parent interaction rather than giving them an electronic toy or plunking them in front of a television set.
- They don't have money to buy books or tutoring or board games. But they all have money to buy the kids the latest X-Box or electronic gear which beeps and bops and excites them. But to a borderline autistic kid is like giving a borderline alcoholic a bottle of vodka. They also have money for premium cable channels and, often, multiple flat-screen televisions sets in the house all blaring at full volume.

Oh, maa-aaa-aaan, he hit that one OUT OF THE BALLPARK.
I swear ... reading his words on this one especially, I hear my wise, beloved, late father; this reads like my dad's words in the wonderful political discussions we had always, from the time I was in elementary school. My dad was so far-sighted and wise politically, his arguments and thinking so clear and reasoned, and I miss him so much, I miss his wise counsel. He held Thomas Sowell and Milton Friedman in equally HIGHEST regard; they were his two favorites, and Walter Williams was right up there with them.
My dad would have loved this column. We are so blessed to have Thomas Sowell. I truly love the man.
Thanks for always pinging me, jaz.

and, when I finally found a job, I had to walk miles to get there, because I couldn't afford both subway fare and food. Sadly, these days walking that distance to get to work would likely expose one to being robbed of whatever precious little money they had on them.

"Your fair share" is more than the Democrats can spend. An impossible task, a fool's errand.
