Tea party group grills Thompson

U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson continues to hold a healthy lead according to polling released this week, but he still needs to win over some conservative voters.

That was apparent when Thompson submitted to questioning at a tea party group event June 4 and drew tough questioning even as he doggedly pleaded his case as a "way right" conservative.

After Thompson held forth for an hour at a Lake Country Area Defenders of Liberty event about his accomplishments as governor and as a Washington cabinet secretary, a businessman in the crowd told the Republican he was a career politician who had wasted everybody's time spouting platitudes.

Thompson heatedly said he didn't appreciate the insult.

The guy, it turned out, just wanted to know, if something happened to Thompson, who Thompson would support for Senate.

Thompson paused, then in a low voice said: "Without a doubt, Fitzgerald. Without a doubt."

He referred to Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, one of his three rivals in the Aug. 14 GOP primary.

It was the first of several surprisingly candid and emotional exchanges in front of the Oconomowoc-based group.

Another questioner interrupted Thompson's spiel about how he brings people together to get stuff done.

"However, Mitch McConnell or whoever is running the show for the Republicans is going to tell you: Hey, you just showed up here in January," the man said, referring to the Senate's Republican leader.

Thompson's response: "Mitch McConnell is not supporting me in the primaries, so I couldn't care less."

Tommy makes some un-nerving comments in this article. It's well worth reading the whole thing.

Apparently he's changed his mind on ethynol and on Obamacare (he supported both just a short time ago.) More mind bending are his claims to being responsible for so much in DC. ???

I only remember his stagering comment upon leaving Health and Human Welfare: "I don't know why the terrorists haven't struck our food supply. It would be so easy."

I don’t know Tommy Thompson very well. but it really seems a wasted opportunity to nominate this guy.

I’d rather see a GOP nominee who was younger and had some real conservative fire in him.

The state that has produced Scott Walker, Paul Ryan, and Ron Johnson deserves better than TT.

It's hard to imagine what a semi-hostile Tea Party Q&A would be like. Perhaps something like this:

I agree. Plus his record has been spotty since he resigned as Governor to go to the Bush Admin. and not so great with Bush. He blocked Walker from running in 2004. He refused to support his Lt. Gov. (McCallum) when he ran for re-election in 2002. He pretended to consider running for Governor and then for Senate in eveery election since — collecting money and keeping other qualified candidates from gaining traction.

Plus he made a lot of money with ethanol and supported Obamacare when it was first proposed. He also came out supporting global warming. He thinks we have short memories, but I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him.

Of course, if he gets the Republican nomination, I’ll vote for him over the odious Tammy Baldwin.

Tommy would be my LAST choice for the Republican primary. I like Eric Hovde, then Jeff Fitzgeral, then Mark Neumann, and finally Tommy.

I wish some candidate would please please please dig up clips of his appearances talking up the health care bill and many appearances were with Dick Gephardt. I couldn’t figure it out at the time till I looked up on the internet what they were doing at the time. The both worked for a company that administered health programs and it stood to make big money from the healthcare bill. I find his ads on TV now saying how he is going to overturn it, such hypocrisy. I, like you, AFR-will vote for him and hold my nose only to keep Baldwin out.

I’m voting for Eric Hovde.

I agree with the man in the article about Tommy.

No way would I vote for him in the primary.

I will hold my nose and vote for him in the regular election to keep Balwin out, if necessary.

I do hope that Wisconsin will do the intelligent thing at the ballot box and not vote for Tommy.

All the other candidates are far far better than he is.

Instead of grilling Tommy T, we should stick a fork in him as he is done. Too old, too moderate and stuck in the 1990s.

Fitzgerald is a better choice all around.

He is just another old time GOP’er. It is time to get rid of these people. They were RINOs.
