The batteries were said to store 85 KWh, about the same as about 10 cups of gasoline - 2/3 of a gallon. The article didn’t mention what happens when you have to use up a few of those cups of gas to heat, or cool the car.

It’s bad, but not that bad. Gasoline contains 36.6 KWh per gallon. Given that IC engines run at about 25% efficiency, it’s similar to an 8 gallon gas tank. 85 KWh is a very large battery. eg: the Chevy reVolting has 10 KWh usable power.
